Noob question, what is the difference between an AR15 lower and a M4 lower if any?

An M4 lower will have an extra hole in it....And you can't have it in CA.

All stripped lowers are essentially the same. Markings would be different according to brand, but essentially have no relevance i.e. using an 5.56 marked lower with a .22lr upper.

No, you saw a N4 lower. A Noveske N4. An M4 is made by Colt and is an automatic rifle.

M4 is a generic term now. M4 is a poor marketing ploy to sell AR15 CARBINES. The lower is all the same on AR15s. Real M4 and M4A1s are select fire weapons. That is the true only difference. You will never see a TRUE M4 or M4A1 lower in a gun shop in CA. And if they have it, they are not going to show you it or offer it for sale.
