In case anyone was wondering about the MI AK handguard, I figured I would post a quick review with some pics. This is the "FDE" version - it comes from the factory in this color.

I threw this on last night after bringing my Draco home from its ten day incarceration. It took about 15 minutes to get it right and that includes removing the old furniture (which thankfully was the easiest AK handguard removal I've ever had!)

The thing installs very easily and is extremely stable when installed. It basically just uses a barrel clamp to keep everything snug. The only thing to look out for when installing is to make sure your cleaning rod is all the way in before you do the final bit of tightening on the screws.

Oh and before people go off on the "AK's shouldn't be tacticooled" stuff, well I already have a classic Russian-red AK and there's another Draco on the way. Just having fun with this one. I will post more info on the gun in the handguns section... Enjoy!

I like the look, how well does it seat? I have read on other sites that some are a little loose when installed.

That doesn't look too bad for a tactical AK.

The thing seats really tight. I can't imagine why it wouldn't. It is a very simple, yet elegant system, which is why I'm guessing they have "patents pending" on the design.

And thanks for the compliments guys!

I've read there's been difficulty on the top rail retaining a zero...

Any plans for mounting an optic?

Looks great by the way.

I suppose that's possible, but it seems to me if everything is tightened up AND the anti-rotation screws are snug against the gas tube the thing has nowhere to go. But that remains to be seen. I am definitely going to mount some sort of small optic on there, like an Aimpoint T1, so I'll report back after that.

Looks good, perfect for a featureless build or if you want an optic.

Make sure you report back once you get the optic on and tested.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. Please let me know if you have any specific questions about the MI handguards - they're definitely a pretty nice piece of kit. Oh, and I got mine at Midway for $110 - that was the cheapest I could find them in FDE. They have black as well for the same price.

Which sling are you using, and how are you connecting it to the gun?

That is a TROY single-point and I attached it with a piece of black, nylon webbing I had laying around. I cut a hole in one end of the nylon webbing (then burned the edges for solidity) then just sandwiched it in between the pistol grip and the receiver. It looks okay and functions just fine until I can find someone to weld something to the back plate. The TROY sling is by far the most comfortable single-point I've tried.

Hmmm... Not a big fan of how the lower section meets the receiver. The gap it leaves because of it's rounded profile allows the receiver to form a sharp corner.

I actually just took this out to the desert this weekend and it is ridiculously fun to shoot. It chewed through all the ammo I fed it, both slow and rapid fire and it was hitting clays (stationary) out to 50 yards, no problem. I had my wife and two friends with me and this was the hit of the day! I'll post up a couple "holy flames!" pictures in a day or so... either way, I HIGHLY recommend a Draco!

AWWW Man that sounds fun. My first AK pistol should be arriving next week hopefully. I cant wait now. Also ur rails look great on your AK. I think those are the nicest AK rails i have ever seen. Most look bulky. Really nice, i love the hogue grip too. Hope you dont mind me copying you but in black;)

That Hogue grip is amazing. THE most comfortable AK grip I've ever used and haven't felt the corners of the receiver at all. I'm going to replace the SAW grip on my Saiga-12 with a Hogue grip, because I like this one so much. FYI, it is kind of a beefy grip, but it really gives great control on this pistol build.

I took it out this weekend and put a couple hundred rounds through it. I had an Aimpoint Micro on it for awhile and that worked out great no POI shift at all. The rail is still rock-solid on there - no complaints - highly recommend this rail system!

You can't use the irons through the Micro can you? (Like an Ultimak allows?)

djleisure
10-15-2009, 10:33 AM
Nope - no irons through the Micro. I'm not planning on keeping the Micro on it anyway - it is WAY too fun to shoot with irons.... down the road I'll probably throw on the LaRue AK IronDot (http://www.tacticalgunfan.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=299) - but I'm still not sure if they have officially released it, or what is going on with that...

Yeah, these are perfectly legal in CA. In fact, I think Henderson Defense has these for less than $500 out the door to your FFL. Just make sure your FFL will receive an AK pistol. A lot will not take them, even though they are perfectly legal. Get one - you won't be sorry!

I have to say, not only is that the coolest Draco I have seen, but it's also one of the coolest guns I have seen period! I just picked up my Draco from Rifle Gear today and if you don't mind, I am going to completely copy yours, FDE and everything. Seriously cool look! Thanks for the inspiration.

Have the exact same thing on my Saiga, (Their Saiga version, a tiny bit longer)..It works great, hasnt loosened up, and holds zero. love it. Gonna buy a new green laser next week to install on it...

As for the folks that say you shouldnt 'tacticool" an AK, well, they can come by my place and try to take it....

Dont AK pistols have to go thru DROS with a 'single shot sled"? I see alot of dealers putting then thru that way, then you can convert them back after they clear and are at your house. Not a big hurdle, but a small hoop to jump thru for the State...

You are correct.

They are imported into CA and DROS'd as single-shot pistols.

I bought mine as a single shot with that silly 30 round mag with no internals in it. I just bought some 10 round pro mags. Also picked up my Midwest Industries handguard yesterday in FDE. Have to get a grip in FDE next.

Has anyone seen the adaptors that make it so you can use a AR grip on a AK? Anyone use them? If so, how do you like it?

Well thanks! Glad you like it! BTW - you don't need an AR/AK grip adapter for the grip that I used - I used a Hogue Ghillie Tan AK grip and I highly recommend it. I also recommend that you get the single-point sling mount made by Calguns user "vinz" - you can find them in the "commercial sales" section of the forums - that thing is awesome!

DJ,

It looks great! I plan on getting one of the sling loops as well. Where did you get that finger stop on the fore grip? I'm getting closer and closer to yours. Just grinded down the spot weld today and removed the barrel nut. Have one of the cheapy slant breaks on there to hold me over until I get a nicer looking one.

BTW, I have to agree with you. The Midwest Industries fore grip mounts up nice and SOLID! That thing isn't going anywhere. As for not putting "tacti-cool" stuff on AK's...the Draco is about as tactical as you can get! This thing was designed for close quarters, just look at it. I might even copy the one member that zippy tied a plastic butter knife to his AR :43:

Thanks again for the inspiration!!!
