Ok, what exactly happens to the thumb when you use a monster grip?

I handled an AR equipped with a MonsterMan grip recently; the thumb just tucks up along the side of the grip. I didn't think it'd be comfortable, but it was quite ergonomic. Less ergonomic, though, was trying to position your trigger finger outside of the trigger guard.

...and reaching the safety is a no-go, unless you have an ambi-safety switch.

And the purpose of a monster grip is to conform to the law so you can still have a detachable mag?

Yes, have you been to his website yet? He explains all of this and it includes photo and video samples so you can see how to grip it.

It makes it a featureless rifle by not allowing a pistol style grasp. Going featureless allows you to use your preban mags or just drop your 10rds.
