Hit your target and be aware of your backstop? Check out nevadashooters.com and ask away. But be aware of the zombie thread in Desert/General Survival.

IIRC, BLM / public land is considered "free for all". Various counties have restrictions of no shooting within 1000' (some 1500') of buildings and roads.

Try Highway 50 about three quarters of the way across the state. Look for the many BLM signs, take the little side roads and stay 3 or 4 miles away from any sign of human habitation or campgrounds. Don't shoot across the road. Stay out of the Fireswamps.

Be Safe, Have a Blast, Pick up every trace of your presence before you leave.

We always make one person the range master to make very clear when the range is cold and actions open to go down range and set up more Pepsi cans.

By the way, for us beginning shotgunners there is no thrill like shooting thrown Pepsi cans. Use Diet Pepsi cause it's not messy and sticky to pick up the cans and haul them home.

Triple points for shooting thrown Pepsi with 9mm pistol.

As thrilling as shooting colored water?

After we get tired of shooting the shotgun, we set up used husks and shoot at them with handguns.

Many desert areas are BLM land. This thread goes into the laws governing firearms use on BLM and other public lands: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=186457

Why would you shoot your 9MM in the air?

go to the Washoe County sherrif website,
http://www.washoesheriff.com/firearms-map.htm
they have the areas good for shooting marked out for ya.
Generally its a safe distance from the road/habitation. like 1000 yards.
I was allowed to shoot from concealment at the Washoe range.
The Sherriff dept is pro gun.
