View Full Version : Question about AK Pistol Trunnion...

I have an AMD-65 kit that I want to build into an AK Pistol at one of the upcoming build parties.

A few questions...

1) Should I cut the folding stock off of the AMD-65 kit and use the original trunion minus the folding stock or should I just buy a pistol Trunnion?

2) Are all ORIGINAL parts considered better from an AK purists view? (My kit has all matching serial #s.)

3) Is it just less work to use a "Pistol" Trunnion in an AMD-65 to AK Pistol build or are there any other things to consider? (Legal concerns? Dont wanna run afoul of any possible SBR stuff?)

If you want an AK pistol, you'd be better off using a "Pistol" type rear trunnion.

If you re-machined the original trunnion so it wouldn't accept a stock that would be acceptable.

That's risky. A quick pin pop and a new wire stock can be installed. Def. go with a pistol trunnion to CYA. There isn't any extra work involved. Just rivet the trunnion on.

How do the AR pistols guys get away with just putting foam on the stock tube or should they use a special pistol tube? If an aks built as a pitol with no stock but the original rear trunion is it illegal having never been built as a rifle?

My guess is that the AR tube is a part of the operational mechanism and therefore allowed. If an AK pistol were to retain a standard rear stock trunnion, I can see how constructive possession could easily be achieved.

A pistol trunion looks cleaner and there is no chance that someone thinks you are trying to create a SBR with it.

But I am trying to make an SBR (ish) clone. I just bought a fake suppressor to pin on my AK pistol and now need to remove the pistol trunnion to install the rifle trunnion and stock. :43: I'm going in the opposite direction.

The bummer is once you turn it from a pistol into a rifle it ayways will be a rilfe. The feds are mean about stuff like that.

Not a problem. That was the intented purpose from the beginning. It will also be the only non-AW rifle registered to me.

So, if 69Mach1 wants to use the parts to make another pistol, he knows how to demil it, bend a new pistol receiver and make a pistol out of it again.

You can do that with any kit.

Cool THX everyone!!!! I will just go with the Pistol Trunnion then.

Oh this I know a little more about duraglock...

AR-Pistol builds usually use "AR Pistol Tubes" Ace, Rock River, Gun Smoke Enterprises and others make them. They are basically carbine length buffer tubes that are round and made with no notches so that you cant attach a collapsible stock on them.

Foam is up to your own preference for those that dont like the look.
