reticle choice is up to you of course, but i suggest getting reticle/turrets that match (MOA/MOA or mil/mil)...

I have a 8-32 NXS with a NP-RR1 on one of my 50s and a 5.5-22 NXS with a NP-R2 on my other 50. It will really depend on exactly what you plan on doing with it and who's teaching you. I would stay away from mil-dots but, some will recommend mil-dots only. If you are planning on shooting FCSA matches and using the gun as a dedicated 1000 yard rifle, I'd go with a Benchrest 8-32 or 12-42 with a NP-R1 or NP-R2. But, if you plan on shooting different distances, you should probably consider the NXS 5.5-22 because it has more verticle adjustment. The R1s and R2s ar probably the most popular reticles among the 50 shooters I know and shoot with.
Oh yea, JOIN THE FCSA! It's now $60/year but, I promise that just the info that you can gleen from the member's only forum will save you far more than that. Not to mention the FCSA discounts, Very High Power (our quarterly magazine) and our suppliers guide. Besides, if you got on the member's forum, you'ld be able to ask this question to hundreds of 50 shooters and get their input.

Do you prefer MIL or MOA based reticle?

MLR / Mil-knobs / ZeroStop
so benchrest and F-class shooters should switch to mil/mil setups?

I really like the NP-R1. Its probably one of th emost versatile reticles because its great for tactical type shooting with wind holds, etc and it isnt too cluttered for benchrest/f-class stuff.
Heres some pics through mine:
