View Full Version : Cheapest AR build?

OK, the comments in the Model 1 Sales thread got me thinking. What is the cheapest build you can put together with items that are currently in stock someplace? Excluding the lower receiver, bullet button and magazine. It has to work, that is the only caveat. Let's see if anybody can beat the one I mentioned there. That was:

DPMS .223 16" bull upper, with bolt carrier group. $375
Model 1 Sales 4 position collapsable stock. $35
Lower Parts Kit. $65

Total: $475, on the door step within a week, from Midway.

Can anybody come up with any of those parts cheaper? Does anybody (reputable) have anything less expensive currently in stock? Is there anything that I forgot?

-Mb (who is hoping to find something even cheaper if it is possible)

Nope, the cheapest one is $409 at midway and I just started an "I hate midway" (or at least their new home page because of having to filter through that crap trying to find this) and it doesn't have any sights. The cheapest you're going to likely get is something like this:

LPK--$50 DPMS blister pack
Lower after dros $125 (give or take a few)
Upper assembly $590+ ship from PK for a RRA mid length elite with tactical carry handle and A2 FSB.

Roughly $750 or so. Sure you could probably go M1S or Del-Ton but this would be a decent platform to start on, and a RRA is a solid upper to go with out of the box with a rear sight and flat top for adding optics later on down the road.

A Del-Ton kit will cost you $560 with their bone stock M4 "Kit" and adding nothing other than a carry handle in it. They're shipping for free apparently now and add a lower at $125 or so and you're up at about $685. If you can't shell out 700 for a setup at this point, I'd say shoot some .22lr for a while and save up for a setup that won't disappoint you later on down the road. Sure, you could go the super saver method but in 6 months and 137 threads of which ammo to use in this upper or why isn't my 16" carbine with irons grouping better than 5-6" at 100 yards, will it make you happy? Just my .02 which is an opinion. We all know what opinions are like :p

I just did a "cheap" build:
Grizzly lower $139
Double star LPK $69
CAA CBS Stock $89
CMMG 16" Complete flat top upper $545
RRA 10/20 Mag $25
Ready to Rock and Roll for: $867
Being my first build I'm sure I paid to much for some things but... Live and learn!:D

Sorry, I should have noted the price was their FFL price. You guys need to get a C&R. The savings in just an order or two to Grafs or Midway more than pay for the $30 cost.

Does DPMS have LPKs for $50 at the moment? Or is it a DPMS pack being sold through somebody else?

Seesm, I know exactly how that goes. My first AR build was put together because I ended up with a BCG and some assorted parts from a friend. I think it was about $500 total, with a M1S upper and an Anvil lower. It shoots just fine, and makes a decent basic AR. Nothing fancy, but definately functional.

pontiacpratt , I think we all overpaid when we first got BRD. You didn't do nearly as badly as some of the horror stories I have heard over the past year...

Thanks, I know I'm doing better than most... I walked in to the local shop and asked for a stripped lower they showed me a CMMG stripped lower for $250 told me I'd never find anything cheaper, then suggested a $1900 complete rifle that looks about like what I finally assembled. I asked for .40 and they told me $23 a box for Wally world ammo. I walked out.

Monkeyboy, you didn't include a rear sight!

I just finished an AR build w/ a complete RRA flattop, 20" 1:8 Twist NM .223 Wylde chambered barrel, Spikes lower, DPMS Lower parts kit & buttstock, rear sight, free float tube, 4 10 round mags, for just $1000. I looked awhile to find that barrel.

I don't feel I did too bad. Cheapest basic AR I've seen was about $1400, & it wouldn't have exactly what I wanted.

Bruce, You're right. Sorry. I am used to just tossing a red dot sight on it.

Stevie, My requirement was that it had to be available quickly. I like model 1 sales. And they have good prices on decent low-end guns. But they have a wait time that is close to 9 months. So while their kit price is good, especially considering that the 2 I have gotten from them work great, I can't say that you can expect to see anything you order from them getting to you before next summer.

So you never linked to the upper for $375. I couldn't find it on midway. I still think that around 750 or so should be the one to shoot for. PKfirearms for an upper will be your friend, lower is your baby, and LPK/buttstock can be had in the classifieds for under 100 bucks complete if you do your part and wait for a decent deal. Good luck and post up whatever you decide on.

anyone know of a dealer in the sacramento area to get a stripped lower for under $150 out the door? wanting to start a new project potentially for my anniversary in a few weeks.... cheapest I've found was around $200 out the door... I'm liking the idea of a "how cheap can I build it" build :)

Well, how much are the transfer fees at your local FFLs? I have seen lowers in the last few weeks in the $90-120 range all over the place. Call the usual suspects and find out who has the best deal right now. Cold War Shooters usually has something fairly cheap. As for doing the low-priced build, let us know what you come out with. That $440 looks like it would be hard to beat. Although it is more work than I think I could pull off. Lowers are easy. That upper looks mighty intimidating to me.

Wow, necropost. Look at armalite, they have a chrome-lined upper with a midlength gas system going for $300 right now. $400 with the BCG. As for the sportical, it looks like your basic model. It should work. But for just a bit more, you can do better.

I love my Model 1 Sales carbine and rifle. The only problem is they have only gotten to the orders they received in early March right now. So if you want something sooner than 9 months from now, look elsewhere.

I just got a AR-15 for $745 with bullet button. No sights though. This is after DROS/PPT and a $8 gun lock. Which means the rifle itself was $700.

CMMG mid length upper, Grizzly multical lower, and DPMS A2 stock and parts kit with bullet button.

Bought off of Calgunners. Slightly used, but overall pretty much new.

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/2945/ar15y.th.jpg (http://img27.imageshack.us/i/ar15y.jpg/)

I shopped around for a while. Got the complete lower a month ago and the upper today. But there are deals out there.

If you're going for those under $700 builds, you're going to have to factor in shipping and possibly the $35 or whatever transfer that gun stores charge you. Because I doubt you will find sub $700 new AR-15s at your local gun store, you will likely have to ship. This adds more cost to it.

And I'd stick with brands like CMMG and Stag. IMO, I wouldn't go for the lowest quality stuff. Try to spend $50 more and get brands with a better reputation. Sure, I will say that most Deltons will rival CMMG/Bushmaster quality, but I think there is a price difference for a reason.

There are deals out there. Although you did get a gouged on the butt stock. You could have gotten the the Model 1 sales cheap 4 position butt stock with all the parts (tube, spring, buffer) for $35-38 from Midway, and then gotten the MOE butt stock by itself for around $50. But you did better than average with the LPK. The flip up sight with that upper was also a decent deal. On a whole that is a good set up for a KISS rifle. Better than my first one was.

As for those of you dealling with transfering lowers, I really recommend just going out to one of the dealers that sells them directly, and avoiding the whole shipping thing altogether. I don't know about Nor Cal, but down south we have a bunch of places that sell them for at or near the Shotgun News prices. I have gotten very good ones for $85-100. And if you do a few at a time, you can dros them all together. This saves on the DROS fees, and sometimes you can even get price breaks. Somebody is bound to chime in with some dealers in your area...

The lower was $89.95 (plus tax) and it included a bullet button. Add in DROS for $25 more. I agree I could have done better on the buttstock, but I was in a hurry to get it built because I really wanted to go shoot it.

I think that covers it...oh yeah, the C-Products mag was $16 if I remember right. I probably could have done better on that as well, I think I've seen them for around $12 shipped.

PS - I didn't include the info on the lower in the earlier post since the OP asked for an idea on pricing for everything but the lower, bullet button, & mags.

I've only put about 500rds though it so far, but it hasn't given me any problems yet. So far I've been pretty satisfied with it. It shots fairly well.

You just have to remember that it does not include a BCG or charging handle. The BCG I received from them was staked.
