Ok I checked the DOJ website for prohibited firearm owners and I am not one of those people. I am on summary probation for a non-violent misdemeanor for another 9 months or so. Will I have any problem getting "approved" to own a firearm? A few of my buddies say I should be fine but I am still sorta nervous.

If you really want to be certain, file one of these. (http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/pfecapp.pdf)

Yeah I saw that on the site, its all in the process right now just thought that maybe someone in the know had a concrete answer. I am pretty sure I am ok but still kinda doubtful.

These days a denial may be from something you are not even thinking about. Un-paid tickets, child support, failure to appear, etc.

The PERSONAL FIREARMS ELIGIBILITY CHECK will give you a definitive answer.

Thanks Halifax, I am pretty sure I am good to go in that area. If I get denied Ill lose out on around $125 but that is ok as I know what I need to do to get it straightened out.

Read over your probation paperwork very carefully. Sometimes they sneak in the and not possess firearms.

Ok so I oredered the gun online, they said they would ship it out as soon as they have one with a 10 rd. magazine. Then I filled out a ship-in form with my local dealer, at what point in the process will they send out my info to get a DOJ background test? Are they going to wait for the handgun to come in then send out the info or will they have done that as soon as they got all my info? And how long is this waiting process going to/supposed to take?

You will meet with your dealer, usually after the handgun has arrived, and present your valid CA DL or ID, HSC, and a proof of residency. The dealer will submit the data to the DOJ. At that point, your ten 24hr wait begins.

Read that as 10 twenty-four hour periods (i.e., 10 FULL days, not a minute sooner)

Do you have the Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) already?

(sorry if I missed that in any earlier post)

Yes sir, that was the very first thing I did. I went in asked about the test, read the sample questions at the back of the 5 or so chapters got them all right. Then took the 30 question test got a 100% (How could you not?)
and paid my $25. That got the ball rolling:D:D:D

What did you end up buying?

I see from your first thread you got an XD .45.

Gold Dot is good. So is Winchester Ranger and SXT.

The check started Wednesday, Tuesday the firearm came in and I was able to hold it and check it out. Man is it a sweet gun!!! No call yet so I am hoping I am good to go!!! I think the day I pick it up I am going to find some ammunition and go to the indoor. Can anyone suggest a good indoor in the OC area? Preferably near Newport? Thanks!!!:)

Just got back from the in-door with my new XD .45acp, the gun is amazing! Fun as hell to shoot and easy, I am really pleased with my buddy Roberts recommendation. I put 90%+ of my rounds where I aimed on target. Its been years since I have shot and I didnt even bring my glasses and the target was at the end of the range. Couldnt be happier!!
