What kind of mechanical skills do you have? It's not hard just take your time and ask someone on the boards if your not sure about something.

Drill, good cobolt bits, grinder or dremel, bench vise will help.

Good job SJgunguy24, makes me want to do a Saiga conversion now. I remember talking to you on the way to Panoche about it. Very nice looking S12 Nor-Cal AK should be your new name :D

Yeah, very nice work. What kind of handguard is that? Are you using the same gas block or did you buy a different type?

It's a TAPCO Galil type handguard. It's Saiga specific and is the most painless way to go. It's the best way to go if you really don't want to mess with the front end.

I had that laying around.

Now thats just awesome. Now I have to ask again, what kind of handguard is that? How does it shoot with the grip?

the handguard used on my rifle is the tapco galil handguard. it is the least amount of hassle(no pressing gas blocks etc):

the one on mikes rifle in the pic above is the utg rail setup for saigas:

Just a quick question... Why convert a saiga? Is it just that the russian IZMASH parts are quality compared to other parts in AK's?

How much did the whole thing cost ya w/ rifle/parts?

P.S Forgot to mention - nice gun :D

I'm not sure who that question was directed to so I'll give my opinion. The Saiga is a great gun at at great price right out of the box. The only thing that kept bugging me was the rube goldberg contraption that was the trigger assembly. It was like the rifle was telling me that it was supposed to be something else. Import laws do not allow it to come in as an AK so they move the trigger back and put a monte carlo stock on it and *poof*, now it's a sporter. I just wanted to make my rifle be all it could be. The trigger pull is exponentially better, the balance and ergonomics are better, and it just feels right now. I have about $750 in mine for everything. On the thread I started about my conversion, it has a list of every component needed as well as the ones I added because I wanted them.

beautiful rifle man! It looks like you used the RADD lock, then went to Solar Tactical???? or vise versa. I have both, currently fitted with RADD, and would like to know which one you like better.

Jax Smirking Revenge
09-24-2009, 4:37 PM
Thanks,
Actually it is the Raddlock in both pics. The thing you see in the top pic is the quick release lever for the side mount. The angle is weird so it looks like it is below where it actually is. I think the Raddlock is perfect and would not change it for anything. The option to put the Radd release lever for free states has me completely sold. I think it is an improvement over the factory mag release. Mine came from the factory with a very stiff spring. I can't imagine the Solar Tactical lock on my rifle. It looks wonky IMO and with that factory spring it would be a bear to get the mag to drop.

Hey Buzz, How do you like that Strikefire? We have very similar builds and I was considering the Strikefire on mine as well (and put the Bushnell on my Remingotn 870) Yours looks awesome, and it is so cute with its little dimples. :)

BuzzKillin
09-24-2009, 5:46 PM
I really like the Strikefire for a sub-$200 rd. I've been able to zero it and keep it zeroed using the UTG side mount (I know some people don't like this one, but I'm happy with it). I haven't been able to come up with any real complaints yet, but it IS my first rd, so I don't have a lot of comparisons. Might be completely night n' day for Eotec users, and maybe even worth the wait. I was not ready to spend $500 on a $350 rifle.

First off the Saiga is an AK, it's a bastardized 74/100 series. Like JSR posted
the entire balance of the rifle is soooo much better. You also lose around 4" in overall length and thats with a fixed AK stock. The trigger greatly improved, it's not going to be some 300$ AR match trigger, but it's smoother and a lighter pull.
What ever the gun costs add 200$ and you'll be GTG. Thats using the Galil type Saiga handguard.

What do I need to do to convert the saiga front end to look more like an AK using AK poly furniture (non Galil ones, just regular AK handguard and top cover)?

69Mach1

A regular AK gas tube and a custom lower handguard retainer.

Can't say for that one but mine isn't that heavy, i'm thinking around 8 lbs with a 30 round mag.

I just weighed mine. With everything on it: sling, optic mount and red dot, grip pod, rail covers, a full 10 round mag, etc. it was just under nine pounds.
