I ordered online 1,000 rounds of ammo. the UPS tracking advised me the package was dropped off and left at front door. Came home and no package. I called UPS and they verified the driver dropped it off.

I live in orange county, I wonder since this is a "theft" should I report to local police because the valuve is about $350 and it is Ammo of 1,000 rounds. Just wondering any I should know before I call the police?

Yes. Also report it as stolen to UPS (I'm pretty sure that ammo requires a signature).

There have been cases where UPS has claimed that they dropped off items when they really hadn't.

that is what I thought too on the signature? So I do not why they left it.

To make it more interesting, our neighbor across the street advised me she was out front and she got a UPS package that same day and time too and she did not remember seeing the driver drop off any package at my house when they dropped stuff of at her house.

I'm suprised whoever you ordered it from didn't send it "signature required at delivery".

I knw sportsmansguide does that when I've ordered from them and that's just fine by me.

Bummer about the theft. Might wanna see if you can recover the loss from your credit card somehow.

Signature may or may not be required, depending on who I order it from.

Example - ATG, no sig ever required. SG, always require signature. Both delivered by UPS.

Did you by chance order it from Cabelas? They've been "cleaning up" their address database, and they merged my name with my neighbor's address. (We both order from them.) So my last 2 ammo orders went to my neighbor. Fortunately I'm friends with my neighbor and I got my ammo. When I called Cabelas to fix the address problem, they guy on the phone said this was happening a lot lately.

I order lots of ammo from online sources.

UPS has NEVER asked for a signature and will leave at door if no one answers.

It also depends what neighborhood you live in. In my area, i've never been asked for a signature by any Currier

I think that there's some requirement for a sig. If UPS didn't get the sig they are violating their policies.

I called the dealer and they said no signature required, just as long at time of shipping it is delcared as small arms ammo.

Yep, happened to me. Then 3 weeks later a neighbor at the opposite end of the street brings me a package he found on his door step. The entire time, UPS emphatically maintains their guy dropped it on my porch:mad:

Bet it shows today.

I currently have a box of defective ammo being sent back to Winchester in East Alton, IL from San Jose.

Status: In Transit
Rescheduled Delivery Date:09/18/2009
Shipped To: EAST ALTON, IL, US
Type:Package
Service:GROUND
Weight:1.00 Lb
SAN JOSE, CA, US

09/16/2009 5:18 A.M. OUT FOR DELIVERY SAN JOSE, CA, US
09/15/2009 1:27 P.M. PICKUP SCAN
09/14/2009 4:38 P.M. BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED

They picked it up from my front door and have been trying to redeliver it back to me for the last 3 days. I emailed UPS to let them know that the East Alton, IL is nowhere near San Jose, CA and that they need to fix the problem. Their response yesterday? The package is in transit to IL and on its way. Yeah, that explains why it says my package is out for delivery in San Jose.

I have had missing UPS shipments where they claim to have dropped the package off. I have full motion activated cameras in front, saw the UPS truck pull up next door and go there but never to my front door. Funny, they claimed to have delivered the package to me!

UPS does things like this on a regular basis. I'm sure the ammunition is still in the UPS system.

I had UPS check and they claim the GPS tracking on their truck shows the truck stopped at my house.

But the resaon I posted in the sections was if anyone knows if I file a police report for theft. they(police) is not going to give me a hard time on some possible legal issue. I know talking to the the shipper they did not click adult signature required.

Another UPS ghost delivery for the win.

I will never use UPS again.

I'm kinda surprised this one hasn't turned into a UPS bashing thread, there's already one or two of those going, though.

Yes, file a police report and UPS claim. It seems pretty common that when you mention a police report in the UPS claim, the package typically shows up. I guess in the future you might have to request signature required or hold for pickup (at your local UPS hub/store).

I believe that if UPS drops off a package on your porch with no signature they take the risk of it being lost or stolen. This happened to a friend of mine and I think when he called to ask UPS that is what they said and they covered the loss. Might wanna check into that. Hope it works out for you.

UPS insures all packages up to the first $100 or $200. Anything above that you are responsible for if you did not purchase additional insurance. Have you tried calling the vendor to see if they will do something for you as far as covering the loss partially or completely? If both UPS and the vendor cover your loss, then there is no reason to file a police report. If you are out cash, then I would file a report with your local police and UPS of course.

I had 2500 rounds of 7.62x25 delivered last week, 50 pounds. No signature required. Not sure what your's weighed but I can't see someone dragging that much weight around after they stole it. do as the other guys mentioned, police report, then go down to ups with the report and make a claim.
when you make a report, print out your receipt or order form for the ammo and the ups tracking information. DO NOT MAKE A REPORT OVER THE PHONE. Go down with you paper work, tell them you want to file a report. You need proof for ups to know that the report was made, this may entice them to do an internal investigation instead of the standard, "it was delivered".
If everyone that lost something thru UPS would file a report, a couple of things would happen. The local PD can zero in on who is doing it. UPS doesn't like bad press, so they will also check into it, A running account of everything stolen will be filed with the local PD.

Similar thing to me. . .

I called the police to report it, but they didn't really care. . . said it would be near impossible to tie it to someone, so not worth their time. . . basically. No report.

UPS would not do anything about it even though I have on record clear instructions that NOTHING is to be left at door. Signature only for ANY delivery.

Midway wanted me to call them directly, but it was about the same time as my case started so I was too busy to follow through. . . Hollow points too. . . I wish stores around here would sell hollow points.

I'd wait until you take the police report to UPS and file a claim there; to reiterate, you do need to file your UPS claim at a UPS store and not over the phone. If that goes nowhere in a couple days, then definitely dispute the charge. Sounds like another UPS driver being lazy or stealing stuff...I've been reading a lot about this on a couple different forums lately.

Call the company you ordered from, and they will file a claim with UPS. It wouldn't hurt to call UPS as well. Same thing happened to me with Optics Planet on an Eotech 557. UPS sent a driver to my house to search for the package. UPS will also ask if you checked with the neighbors and checked around bushes and stuff. Now I always request "signature required". About 2 weeks later the Eotech was at my door with no additional cost.

I called UPS for my stolen package, no problems. I wouldn't go out of my way for their mistake. I can't believe they leave hundreds of dollars worth of stuff at the door in plain sight. I'm sure they are used to stolen packages.

I think that there's some requirement for a sig. If UPS didn't get the sig they are violating their policies.

I usually deal with Ammumition To Go. I always have the items delivered to my office; I'm luckly that the owner is cool with this. I think you can specify that a signature be required or that you will pick up at the UPS office.

A 50 lb package from Midway, Cabellas, Wideners, etc = a call from the UPS driver to a friend to meet him for lunch.

This must be a common thing. I have had many problems with UPS in the past.. They have left things next to my porch under a bench and it rained ruining the shoes in the box. The other incident happened to be ammo, It had not shown up in the time that it was scheduled so I called and they said that they had delivered it on the porch and it was not there. I do all the calling and complaining and get nowhere. A week and a half later I happen to be cleaning out the dog house on the patio and low and behold what do I find in the dog house............ the freaking case of ammo..
When I finally cornered the UPS driver he said yes he put it in the dog house and left a note on the door.... never saw a note on the door...... weeks later found the note on the side of the house where the trash cans are kept..
I guess the wind blue the note off the door and down the side of the house...

So I guess, try to find the actual driver and find out his mo...

Good luck on the hunt for your lost ammo!

My local UPS guy dropped off some motorcycle tires last week.
I was home and went outside to meet him.
He said it was good I was there, otherwise, he would not have left the tires, and I would have had to go to the UPS depot to pick them up.
He said the tires were very steal-able, and UPS has had many incidents lately where someone is following them around and stealing deliveries.
I showed him a hiding place where he can leave things and he said that was great, he would use it in the future.
I can see why the other ammo delivery mentioned above was left in a dog house.

Dude that sucks! 2 things.....1.I always have stuff delivered to my work, the boss doesn't care(he's a hunter) and the UPS guy knows us all(it's a small business). 2. When ordering from ATG there is a box you have to uncheck if you don't want shipping insurance. I always get it just in case as it's only a couple of bucks.

Does not require a signature for ammo UNLESS the shipper requests it as a the 21 or older law. If the buyer has showed the seller a proof of age, then no signature is needed.:D

Shipper would specify if signature is required for delivery.

It is not a UPS policy in most cases at detached single family dwellings. Depending on the area or item it is driver discretion to obtain a signature if not explicitly specified by the shipper.

I had 350 rounds of 9mm coming in from AIMsurplus - a friend of mine was riding his bike over to my house and just happened to be crossing into my driveway when the UPS guy rolled up. He just handed my friend the ammo and drove off without a signature or verifying the guy he just handed ammo to lived there.

No signature was required for the 7.62x39 I ordered either, was just left on the doorstep.

Hanging out with my neighbor again, she swears up and down the UPS guy dropped a package at her house the driver then got back in truck and just drove by my house the day UPS said they left it at my door. I am convinced the driver took it or left it at a different house on mistake. I live in a gated community. I have packages left on my door weekly with no issues. The one time Ammo is dropped off that is the one package is stolen?

My neighbors also happens to be a federal agent with US customs and he mentioned UPS has a greater theft issue internally then any thing else, I guess that is why Dell computers stopped using UPS.

Oh yeah, I called the police to report the theft today, and the officer went silent when he asked me how many rounds and I told him 1,000 rounds.

I think you would have been miles ahead if you had printed out your receipt, printed out the tracking information and got a name of who you contacted at UPS and take it down to the PD to make the report. Half the work is done and if it is given to a detective, all he has to do is call in the driver, show him the paper work and sweat him for a little bit.

I gave the officer everything I had which was the value, the tracking #, and the statement of my neigbor. I could tell from the officers response without someone actually seeing the driver or someone else commiting the actual crime. The officer actually told me with out being a smart *** it would "fall on death ears" and that is a actual quote. End of the day cops have more important things to do then chase after a crime where the lost amounted to $350.

I hate UPS... have had several packages stolen because they deemed it "safe to leave package"... one time they left a 300$ digital camera in a apartment hallway on the floor in front of my door, and tried to say I stole it... thankfully I used AMEX and I got a replacement; I couldn't believe anyone w/ 2 functioning brain cells would leave a camera in the unsecured hallway of a busy 1st floor apartment... genious, pure unadulterated genious. I have repeatedly requested sign only, and have still had packages left and stolen. I think they steal it themselves.

reading some of these responses my ammo was never received from AmmunitionToGo and their response was to take it up with UPS. Filed a claim with UPS and after a few weeks finally a replacement order was received.

I have all my items shipped to a different address because 95% of the time someone is available at that address to accept and sign for it.

There have been cases where UPS has claimed that they dropped off items when they really hadn't.

My wife just ordered some clothing that was shipped UPS, supposed to arrive in time for vacation. The tracking info showed it as delivered to final destination the day before we left. Two weeks later, when she called the vendor to find out where the package was at (not delivered to our house yet) the vendor says that UPS dropped it off "at our local post office" to be delivered with our MAIL. But, we had put a hold on the mail while going on vacation. Yes, when we returned and our held mail was delivered the package is there.

Turns out UPS is now subcontracting with USPS (or vice-versa? or both?). So, maybe check with your mail carrier.
