I arranged a range day yesterday at Metcalf for me and some friends. I figured an 11:00AM timeframe would work great for everybody. Got to the range at exactly 11:05AM to find one of my buddies sitting outside by his truck. He walks up to me as I drove up, saying, "the range is full!" "Say what?" In 5 years of shooting at Metcalf, I have never ever seen that range full. In disbelief, I park my car, walk down to the range office, and saw that every single lane had shooters in it. I talked to Gerry, the range master, and he's got a waiting list with half-a-dozen people on it waiting for an open lane! What the hell is going on? And I had about 8 guys coming!

Luckily I got me and my friends access to the 200yd range so we didn't have to mess around on the public side. Good thing too since I had one shooter who had just recently picked up a handgun and another person who had never shot a gun before.

Here's some pictures of our day:

More pistol fun.

It's a long way to 200 yards. But one of my friends managed to knock down the gong with his Springfield Armory Operator.

We had to shut the 200yd range down at 1:00PM so we decided to go have lunch and continue our fun elsewhere. After lunch we convoyed over to the SJ Municipal Range at 10th St., I unlocked it, and the fun resumed.

My friend Rob and his new .17HMR:

My target. 10 yards, drawing from the holster doing Mozambique drills + speed reloads + tactical reloads.

Bill had issues with his shots going low/left. I brought out my corrective targets for him. This is AFTER he used just one of corrective targets.

Look ma! Brass in the air.

Oh, almost forgot.

The "never before shot" newbie is now shopping for his first handgun.

And our "never fired a rifle before" newbie was so stoked that he nailed the gongs at 200yds with Remington 700PSS, an M1A, an AR, and an AK that he's also now going shopping for a rifle.

Looks like a good time. Is this a range in Bay Area? Looks pretty cool.

I was at Chabot yesterday and noticed the same thing. A lot of people came out to shoot and one guy had about half a dozen newbies with him.

I love shooting when the flowers are in bloom, the sun is shining and the grass is lush green. Add Noobies to the mix and it is one awefully fine day !!!

Yes!

The outdoor range is in south San Jose, officially known as "Field Sports Park" but everybody calls it "Metcalf". The 200yd bay that you see in the pictures is not usually available to the general public (I think only on 4th Sundays). The "public side" rifle bay only goes up to 100yards. More info here: http://www.parkhere.org/channel/0,4770,chid%253D16490%2526sid%253D12761,00.html

The indoor range is also in San Jose, a couple of miles south of downtown near the Spartan Stadium and the Ice Center. It's officially known as the "San Jose Municipal Range", but we just call it "10th St." More info here: http://www.scvrc.com/10th_street.htm

WOW! Two ranges in one day. That's what I call a day of shooting. Is that a Whamo-Camo stock?

If you're talking about the tiger-striped M1A.... no. That's the "ScorpioVI Special", also known as the "damn-factory-finish-was-flaking-off-the-synthetic-stock-and-Alan-got-bored-one-day-so-he-went-to-OSH-pulled-out-his-tiger-stripe-camo-and-started-painting-special". The plus side is that it only cost me about $20 in material and maybe 10 hours of work.

Hey Alan,

Are you still with SNAP? I haven't heard from Daron since getting a voicemail telling me the Feb. meet was cancelled. Any news? Thanks.

Yes. I've e-mailed them about it but I couldn't quite swallow their asking price at the time, so I went the DIY route.
