The same thing happened to me when I attempted to load some "economy" loads on my Essex home-built 1911 using 4.5gr of Unique. They shot fine but didn't cycle the action on my 1911. They didn't even cycle far enough to sotve-pipe (...well, one did) and they got wedged between the breach and the slide. My 5gr loads did work, though...

I opted for 5.5gr and they cycle well...

One of two things need to happen: if your gun is new, you need to put a few hundred rounds through it to wear in the spring. They're can be pretty tight sometimes when they're new.

Or, get some more heavily charged ammo...

Or get a lighter recoil spring that will cycle properly with the wimpier ammo. ;)

The ammo in question is PMC, which is stated on the box as being loaded to military specs. I got the pistol used and have no idea if the recoil spring is stock or not.

You might want to check to make sure the spring wasn't installed backwards. Believe it or not, that spring is only intended to go in one way and if it's installed backwards, it can potentially cause issues....

My Springfield Loaded was doing the same thing, last round in the magazine only.

It was the extractor, dirty, nothing more. Cleaned the extractor tunnel and all is good now.

If you have a chronograph see what kind of velocity you are getting. I am willing to bet it is under powered. Like Randall said get a weaker recoil spring when using this ammo. I am assuming Springfield is using a 16# recoil spring. Try a 14# and I think you will see this go away. The slide is just simply closing on the case as it cycles. If you are not getting any failures to extract I would be surprised. PM me if you would like one. I have a lightly used 14# spring I can throw in the mail for you. PM me if interested.

It's actually not that the slide is closing on the case (it is), it's really that the slide is not cycling all the way back.
When the slide cycles fully, there's more TIME for the case to properly eject.

The fact that it only happens on the last round is because the follower does not push the last case out of the ejection port as well as if there was another round in the magazine.
Since the slide is not cycling fully, the case is not getting flipped out of the ejection port by the ejector either.
An extended ejector helps with this, but the ultimate fix is to tune the mainspring for the ammo.

I encountered this problem with my mil-spec, but after 400-500 or so rounds with a #18.5 spring, I haven't had one issue.

The mainspring just needs to wear a bit along with the rest of the gun.

The extractor doesn't have enough tension to remove the casing before the slide returns to battery. This happens a lot on 10mm 1911s. Adjust tension.
