ok I've seen people put a round in the muzzle. is this to show muzzle wear? how much of the actual bullet stick out before it becomes casing.

I'm not sure of an actual measurement, but, the more the better! HTH.

It's just a rough field test for muzzle erosion, basically shows that it's still around .30 caliber ;). It's much more accurate to borrow or buy a real gauge, which will give you a real number and also check for throat erosion at the other end.

And keep in mind, plenty of guns with significant TE/ME still shoot quite well. The condition of the rifling and crown are just as important, if not moreso.
