View Full Version : Check Head Space on a SKS?

Okay, just put together a Yugo SKS. Most of the parts are mis-Matched.
Kinda a "Rat Rod" Yugo. Got some stuff from some of the online vendors to finish it off.
I guess the smart thing is to have a gunsmith look at it first and check the headspace? Make sure its good to go?

I would have it checked unless you're 100% sure its all put together correctly and you have no doubt it is

it's an SKS, load a round in it, tie it to a tire with a string around the trigger, and pull. see what happens. check the brass(steel) cartridge for bad signs. and enjoy. these are russian-designed guns, and not very headspace-sensitive. or spend some money on headspace gauges or pay too much to have it checked, choice is yours. i've always used the tire myself.

Have it checked, or order the gauges and check it yourself.
You can get both a Go and No-go gauge for about $50. What's a gunsmith going to charge you to check it? ...$20? ....$30?
You build 2 7.62x39mm rifles in your life and they've paid for themselves...
