I going and taking my bud and brother. Its my first gunshow and they say its a big one. I'll be looking for add-on parts for my 1911 coming. Someone just told me 30rd AR mags are legal to buy there.....I personally was shocked to hear this http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

I just don't understand why 10 isn't enough for people.

I went to the show back in April and got stuck in that ugly traffic jam. I was going to go again in August, but will be spending my cash on a new project instead of running up to show. Maybe I'll hit the November show...

Indeed 30 rounders are legal to purchase in Nevada, BUT it isn't legal to bring them back to Kali.

If I can get off early Fri afternoon, my GF & I likely'd be heading there, will collide with my cousin from Oregon.

Prob would stay at Silver Legacy or Nugget, though I/we've never tried the El Dorado.

Plan would be to run around the show much of Saturday, then come back on Sun on way out and pick up a batch of Miwall ammo to keep the rear shocks on trucks in their operational zone on the way back http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And I could use a good Silver Legacy prime rib.

Sorry BuBye, wasn't there a guy on this board that believed we didn't need anything over 10 rounds???? Think his name was Bill Ruger WannaBe-something.

Bill, stop being a stick in the mud. I'm only going to bring back a few of those "ULTRA-deadly 50 caliber sniper rifles" (terminology courtesy of the Swinestein). Maybe I can also pick up some of those depleted uranium armor peircing rounds and maybe a minute-man backpack nuke while I'm at it. I've got $40 bucks, so after buying all that, I can stop by Atlantis for a steak dinner.

Whoo hooo, boy do I have a hell of a trip planned.

Actually I plan to go on the Sat morning. Anyone want to meet at Atlantis or whereever for an "after show" dinner?

Yeah Sterling's is great. I'm getting older and my tummy doesn't work with quite the alacrity that it had when I was 22, so I order it medium.

I like the steakhouse at Western Village too. It 's an odd place - owned by Peppermill apparently; it's a combo gas station, casino/ restuarants and a Days Inn-like motel. The little steakhouse in there is a gem, first rate and not schlocky. Lotsa locals go there.

Several points:
1) This is a big show. It won't look like it when you walk in because it is in two rooms. Go to the far right corner to get to the second room. At about three or four rows from the rear look for Mustang Range. They will be showing a movie of their machine gun shoot. There will be a shoot on Saturday the 13th from 4:00PM to 10PM with night tracer shoot starting at 8PM.

2)I have been to this show 6 or 7 times and have not found things that interest me. I do much better at the Crossroads of the West Shows at the Reno/Sparks Convention Center. The next one is next weekend, July 30 & 31. The Hilton show has a lot of Cowboy Shooting and antique stuff.

3)If you want ammo and don't want to take it with you Sat then buy it on Sat and pick it up on Sunday. I have gotten the last case of something late on Sat morning.

4)Last trip to this show was with two other people. We all wanted something: Stainless .45/70 rifle, inexpensive used revolver and mild .38 cal ammo. None of us found what we wanted so I took them to Silver State Arms at 3020 Keitzke Lane. Hilton west to Keitzke left to Silver City on left. 775 827-0303. We each got exactly what we wanted. The .45/70 guy even took his home (it is NV).

5) I will be at the show next Saturday if anyone wants to meet for a coffee. If anyone would like to talk about the above PM me with your phone number and a good time to call.

I'll make a point to try 'em next time I'm in Reno. Just off the I-80 east of Sparks, right? I've read your comments on this place before and it sounds like great food.

Curious? Does this restaurant have a display of semi-famous guns in the lobby? If it does, I might have been there lots of years ago. Or I could be thinking of another restaurant. ¿Quién sabé?

Western Village is at the far end of Sparks just N of 80; you take the N. McCarran Blvd exit to get there. It's before the Sparks Marina area.

It's visible from 80.

Forgive what may be a silly question....

But, when you factor in the gas and your time travelling to Reno and back is it worth whatever savings you may get?

Given that you can't buy anything that's illegal in Cali...are the savings on what you can get worth the expense of the trip?

Of course, perhaps I am mistaken...can you buy things there you can't get here? The only thing that comes to mind is purchasing a handgun that isn't on the DOJ approved list and registering it here within the 10 day or whatever time frame it is (assuming this is legal?).

At any rate, someone kindly enlighten me as to the cost/benefit of a Reno trip.

Tony some of us are not concerned about saving money so much as seeing a good show. I dont reload to save money either. I like to see 10 models of what I am looking for instead of one. I also get odd dies and collectible items you dont see anywhere in this state.

08-07-2005, 3:03 AM
Made the treck up to the crossroads show last weekend. $30 in gas, $10 lunch, $5 to park ther, $8 to enter. All to find that the gun I was looking for was priced higher at any booth than it was online. Since I waisted cash and a day, I at least got a holster for $19. Enjoyed Boomtown on the way back. Wasn't impressed for my first gun show.. neither was my buddy. Even the red-dot lasers these guys were selling for 3x as much as on the damn internet. Hope the one in August is better if we make it.

Are most going to be there Friday night or Saturday night? It would be fun to meet up for dinner. I'll be up there Thursday through Saturday (I like to get to the show first thing on Friday). One other cool place I visit evrytime is Sportsmans Warehouse (http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.com/). This place is like a mini (not too small size of a Target store) Cabela's. It's right near Silver State Arms listed above. It will do untill they build the new Cabela's near Boomtown.

Hope to see you guys there.

Curious, what's wrong w/Phoenix? That was the Flamingo Hilton awhile back, wasn't it? I saw some reasonable rates (compared to others) on Hotels.COM but decided not to.

Is Phoenix like the Comstock or Sands Regency - an older beater hotel used for 'overflow', not well maintained, etc.?

Normally I stay at Silv Legacy or Nugget but btwn fairly last-minute reservations and not wanting to pay a fortune, I'm staying at Fitzgerald's - which was OK when I stayed there in 1997.

Maybe I'll run into y'all on the show floor on Sat. Will be wearing a red shirt and distinctive Smith&Wesson cap. I'm bringing my GF, and colliding w/my Oregon cousin+wife up there so prob won't get a chance to dine (or rather, chow down) w/you guys.

For future Big Reno gun shows, the Hilton gives you a break on the price of a room. You have to mention that you are going up for the gun show and they will give you the "show" rate. I think the price was $69 or $79 a night. It's not the best of hotels but it is nice to just carry all your purchases (ammo) up to the room. I think one catch for the room rate is you have to arrive on Thurs. or Fri. Going to the show on Friday morning is great. There is no crowd. This time my wife wanted to stay at the Silver Legacy.

Have a good time.

Hmm, everytime I go to Big Reno Show it's relatively short notice (maybe 2-3+ wks ahead I know I can go). Reno Hilton usu sold out on their website and Travelocity, Orbitz, Hotels.COM, sites etc.

Can you still call for a "show special" reservation there, were a block of rooms reserved?

Even though I like Silv. Legacy (and Sterling's Steakhouse!) and being 'on the strip' to mosey around the evening, having a room near the show to haul my ammo to would be great.

It's refreshing to be in any Reno hotel during 'gun show season'. Lotsa long cases, nobody even blinks.

Bill,
We went last year OCT/NOV dont remember exact dates, but I booked the rooms online at the Hilton for $139 per night. We entered some wrong data, so we called the hotel to straighten it out. After we told the operator we were coming to the Big Show the room rates were reduced to $79 per night. It didn’t save me money in the long run though, because I just spent more on Miwall ammo http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Bill,

As Capitol said, just call in and mention the Big Reno Show. I don't think blocks are reserved, it's just on availability. This particular show had a lot of other stuff happening at the same time and rooms were booked early. All of Reno seemed to be very busy this time. Call the Hilton far in advance and if you need to cancel you only need 48 hrs notice (I think). This time we stayed in a very nice suite at the Silver Legacy. It was nice.......but I would have rather just stayed at the Hilton (and spent my savings on rifles). It was a small price to pay to keep my wife interested in going to the gun show with me.

I couldn't get anything reasonable at Nugget, SL, or even CircusCircus at short notice during a busy month (and when I walked thru Circus Circus this wknd, I know I will NEVER stay there - too many @#!$^* damned screaming kids). We stayed at Fitzgeralds, which was actually not bad ($2.25 whiskey sours! http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. Heard questionable things about Golden Phoenix so stayed away.

1st nite we ate at Benihana's (in Golden Phoenix), which was good. Ate at El Dorado, 2nd nite, at their Prime Rib/steakhouse, which was excellent. Meat was PERFECT, and the salad bar was a KNOCKOUT (much better/fresher, more extensive selection, etc. than the usual grazing fare at buffets down the hall).

However, going to/from Benihana's, we did see how schlocky the Golden Phoenix was. This place was, I seem to recall, the old Flamingo Hilton that had a rooftop buffet (where lotsa folks got food poisoning several years ago!).

Apparently some low-budget overseas managment took over from Hilton and renamed it Golden Phoenix - the place is pretty beaten up, carpets worn, etc. And when I saw the "gift shop", I couldn't believe how tacky it was - GF and I broke out laughing.

A "Phoenix" is a mythological bird that arises from its own ashes. I think we should reverse the process - this Phoneix needs to be burned! Or, at least be renamed the Brown Phoneix for the cr*appy aura, as Motel 6 woulda been far preferable to this.

Mr331 wrote:

Some bulk Miwall big bore ammo - 44Mag, 45LC, 45ACP. They didn't have any 45 Auto Rim, which I'd like to try in my new S&W 625.

Went to the DPMS tables and got my cousin squared away with enough parts for his upcoming 20" AR. A few months ago I gave him a 20" chrome FN barrel & a DPMS flattop upper receiver, so he just needs to throw 'em together and also get a lower.

Did see some 6.8mm stuff at various AR vendors, but no one had any chrome-lined 6.8mm barrels. If they'd've had one I'd've picked one up just for giggles (along w/some 10rd mags)

Got myself another ball-detent front pivot pin - this is for postban Colt AR lowers not having usu milspec detent pin for the front pivot pin: these use a "twin screw" pivot pin setup instead (which makes gun harder to clean, break down, etc). The first detent-pivot-pin I got from Brownell's, 2-3 yrs ago, prob also made by DPMS or its supplier) seems to walk out after a hundred or so rounds fired: the ball detent's drilled too far out to the left, and the pin can walk far enough so "D"-head cams over mating edge on lower rcvr - causes gradual compression of ball detent so pin can start drifting all the way out.

Was looking for a handful (or so) of moonclips for my new S&W 625 but didn't see ANY. I'd've settled for half or full moon clips, plastic or metal. Funny, because I saw 4 or 5 various 625s on tables at the show (4", 5" and JM models).

Bought a good M4 stock wrench from Sherluk.

Had a nice chat with the guys from One Eyed Jack's.

Saw one more new Ruger 50th Anniv. BLackhawk (357) but it was paired with an orig 1955 flattop, so the guy wouldn't part with the new 50th Anniv Ruger.

Saw quite a few ACOG-patent-violating
"NcStar" 4X/6X scopes for ARs. Trijicon jumped all over NcStar at SHOT Show in January (apparently I just missed out on some loud Trijcon vs NcStar "discussions" in the aisle!) Apparently some still leaked out into pipeline. I didn't feel like yammering witht the poor schmuck selling 'em.

Seems the only way Red China will ever respect I.P. rights is if the message is delivered with a nuke.

(And why someone would wanna put a crap scope on a nice AR is a whole 'nuther thing besides...)
