View Full Version : RRA "CAR A4" upper, good choice or bad?

Hello everybody,
I'm sorry if I am bringing up a question that has already been answered before, but here it goes :

I have been thinking about building my first AR, so a few days ago I purchased a S&W lower receiver. After talking to a couple of friends and hearing some good things about Rock River Arms, I went to a local gun store and picked up a RRA "CAR A4" complete upper (for under $500). The price was right for me, but now I'm sitting here and thinking if I made the right choice.
This thing came with a 16" Wilson Chrome Moly, 1:9 Twist barrel and now I'm being told that Chrome lined is the only way to go, otherwise I'm just wasting money.
Can anyone else please share some info on this?

For a plinker, it's fine. Clean it, lube it, shoot it :)

I'd say you made a good decision. Rock River Arms makes some really good stuff, especially for that price.

Chrome lined is a nice option, all of my current AR's are chrome lined but i have had moly barrels previously. My honest opinion... chrome lined is preferred but is not the be all end all. Many talk about chrome moly barrels as if their complete and utter garbage, when this is not the case. Sure they tend to not last as long as chrome lined barrels but most AR shooters (especially with ammo prices nowadays) won't ever get a high enough round count to realize this.

The same can be said about 1/9 twist... Again 1/7 is nice, i prefer 1/7 but for simple plinking and range fun 1/9 will do you just fine.

How many rounds would you say I can expect the Chrome Moly barrel to last for?
I guess by the time it wears out I'll be able to afford a better barrel or maybe the whole new upper.

I put a couple thousand plus through my first RRA chome-moly and didn't lose any accuracy.

Where did you get it from

Nothing wrong with your upper. If you got it for under $500 you did fine.

If you wanna be snobby like some of us... next upper you get, try LMT, Noveske, Colt, Daniel Defense. It'll cost you something like $150 more. Worth it to some, not worth it to others.

Just put it this way. If you can afford to shoot that many rounds (thousands) you can definitely afford a new barrel or whole new upper. :D

+1

Haha I think the amount of ammo you need to wear that sucker out enough for you to notice any difference in accuracy could buy you like 10 new upper receivers or like 40 new barrels. ;) You'll do just fine.

Sweet! I was afraid it was something like 2000 - 3000 rounds and then I'd need a new one.

It will get to 3000 rounds easily. Obviously there is no exact round count set but it's way more than 3000 rounds.

See I heard with 77gr Federal Gold Match the 16" stainless varmit is capable of .36 moa @ 100 yards. (capable of being the key word not my shooting skills lol) Meanwhile the RRA site only claims a modest .75 MOA @ 100 yards. I get the feeling the 16" CAR with the right ammo and glass can do signifigantly better than 1 moa.
