I have a bunch of NATO 7.62x51 and don't feel like buying or hand loading match grade rounds. I roll my own for my 300WinMag PSS so I can, I just don't want to....

So the rifles I've been considering purchasing are the Remington PSS, 700P, LTR, or Milspec 5r.

I don't know if it's worth the extra money to get the 5r since I'll be shooting the lighter bullet standard military round.

I'm looking to spend about $1000 for a decent target rifle...my shooting ranges out to 700 yards.

If you have an opinion, I'd appreciate hearing it. If there is another rifle I should look at, let me know!! I'm not a fan of wood...:D

Get the 700 SPS Tactical. Cheap & 20" heavy barrel.

considering that commericla .308 is actually "stronger" (more pressure) than the NATO version... any gun chambered in .308 can fire off the NATO stuff safely.

if you don't want to mod, bigbamboo and a few others like the tikka t3 rifles. they shoot 1/2" groups out of box (according to bigbamboo) with no tinkering. and are about the same price as the rem700's (500-650 range).

There are three I like. I think I am leaning towards the Savage.

All of these are affordable and pretty good right from the box.

Here a site that has a few starter packages and I am certain you will find something you like here.

Well even though you arent going to put match grade ammo you could still get damn good groups with your rifle. For example, I got a 10 shot 1.5" group at 100yds with Aussie ball through my .308 AR. Any choice is good, just get whatever you think is the coolest. I guess it doesnt matter if you arent going to run match ammo

My LTR using black hills match didn't do any better than 1 MOA out of the box using a 9X at 100 yards. Other have said the Tikka can do better. Really depends on what you want. I would get either the LTR, SPS, or a Tikka.

Sounds like you already have a long range gun.

I'd get the Springfield Scout and have some fun.

I'm looking for more accuracy than my HK91 will deliver at longer ranges since my neighbor shooting buddy is an ex-ranger sniper.
He's spot on with an M44 I gave him.....

Is there a significant difference in recoil between a 7 1/2lb rifle and one that is 9lbs (before optics) shooting 7.62x51? (LTR vs.700P)

Since most of the guns I've shot are semi's, I'm kind of a noob when it comes to bolt action longer range precision shooting, but that seems to be the direction I'm heading....

Thanks, Jay.

Why not an FAL?

Yeah why not a FAL or an M1A. Once you go FAL you never go back.
