I'm a California resident who has owned a Colt Sporter since the early '90's. Rather than register it during the ban, I stored it out of state. I'd like to bring it back into California and legally register it (in it's pre-ban state). Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The registration period closed years ago. It is not legal to bring back into California. You could bring in all the parts minus the lower, buy a new off list lower here in CA, and build a new rifle with it, provided you go featureless or non-detachable mag. See the CA AW ID flowchart (http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf) for details.

Correct; that is basically your only option.

Thanks to all. I'll just wait till I retire and move out of state.

AWB could be gone before that, if you're still in your 40s, maybe 50s..

Did the same thing and it's living in my old man's safe in TX.

Good news is that any high cap mags that you possessed here in CA prior to the ban can be brought back in and used freely (rifle with a featureless build). Doesn't matter that they were out of state for awhile as long as you owned them while you were in CA prior to 1999.

Are you in the US military?

I did the same. I have a Sporter, three 30 round mags and the two 20 rounders that came with it chilling at my daughters in KS. In a good year I get to shoot it a couple of times. I recall feeling guilty when I bought it (79 or so) and pulled the "sportsmans plugs" out of the factory mags to go from 10 to 20 rounds. We had it good then and never appreciated it.

That's wishful thinking. I hope you are right.

AD military get a one time deal to bring anything you own into the state with orders. It can be years after you got here, but you only get one shoot at it

However, unlike having a truly pre-ban registered AW, if you are a California resident AD Military, and you have your post-ban AW registered, when you retire, or get out, the registration does NOT continue after you are out of the Military. So the AW has to be sent off the live out of state, or disassembled and rebuilt to be OLL compliant, and the lower sent to live out of state.
