My Rock River A2 stock arrived today. I ordered black, and just *now* found out that black=gray. I've searched around for ways to darken it, and I stumbled on a site that recommended rubbing it down with BreakFree. There must be a better way. How did you guys do it?

I know a guy who sanded it smooth then painted it black. Looks pretty cool.

Use ballistol. It will darken it and not give you cancer.

I have lightly bead blasted for texture and CeraKote, required about 3 hours @ 200 degrees for the cure and is as black as anything you can get and a very solid coating

Hit it with 220 sand paper to rough the surface up just a bit. Wipe down with paint thinner to remove any oily residue.

Heat it up with a hair dryer and use flat black rattle can. I put 4 coats, 1st coat is a slight dusting, 2nd a bit heavier, 3rd cover completely,4th touch up. Let it sit for 1 day and your GTG. The CLP method is fine, but don't ever handle the rifle with decent clothes on.

Are their any companies that still make a black A2 buttstock?

Swapped it for an A1 - I don't like A2 stocks.

Oil it up.....or send it to me to be Duracoated for $15+ shipping both ways.

But please...don't send it to me oiled up :)

Yeah, duracoated or BBQ black paint works well. I have tried the satin BBQ high temp paint for dings on barrels and it works great. CLP and most things won't take the paint off and it gives it a nice finish. I'm going to try that on one of my A2 stocks I think and see how it works out. If nothing else, i'll just take it back down to stock and try a different paint if I don't like it.

I think I'll do just that! Do you have a preferred shipping method?

I pull out a fine-tipped Sharpie, throw in some old tapes of the first three seasons of Growing Pains and learn life-lessons from those insufferable Sever's while I methodically cover the bad, bad greyishness with the ever-more-awesome black. Why a fine-tipped Sharpie and not, say, a mega-tipped Sharpie to just bang it out? You can't rush greatness, son, you just can't...

Does solvent breakdown plastics?

Mineral oil works but it will turn black with time. You can Duracoat it or use a plastic bonding paint too

As mentioned before: CLP has cancer-causing carcinogens, not to mention it is extremely bad for your liver. Not something I want to be in constant contact with my face.

Why on earth did they release grey ones in the first place?
