How many of you FFLs are also DOJ Certified Instructors so you can administer the HSC testing? I am very close to getting my CFD and am worried about losing sales if I have to send clients away to get their HSC.

I am. I think it's worth it. Did it at Bullseye with a guy named Peter.

Yup... only way to fly, got mine way back in 2003 (I think)... anyway, you don't want to pass getting Certification and then miss-out on all the great entertainment. The 25$ is NOT funny, but once you get past that... the test is a real hoot for the customers and good for a lot of laughs!

I got mine... My Rangemaster certification at work exempted me from any of the process, so I'm not sure what it takes to get it.. I still need to get the HSC testing packet.. I've procrastinated it, as most of my customers have the cards already.. I've had a few that asked, but got their HSC before they came up.. What does the testing materials and cards cost these days?

I am as well. My background as a federal agent as well as federal instructor made it a moot point for jumping through all the hoops in CA. The just issued the instructor credential...thankfully.

You will need to find a way to get it. Never send your client to your competition.

Yeah, I am thinking it would be foolish not to get it.

Do you really need the video and study guides?

Do you really need the video and study guides?

I got the study guides but not the video. Study guides have come in handy on several occasions.

If you are not a HSC Instructor, then you can not sell handguns since you have to do the safety demonstration. Whether you get the certificates is another question, but it is useful.

The first video is free and they have a lot of them :-).

Would have been nice to know that ahead of time, but what do you expect from California Government. Anyone know a cheap and fast way to get certified?

I was able to use one of the instructors nearby and he set up a one on one a couple of days after my first call for 50.00 or 75.00. Took about two hours to go over all the info and run through the drills with each type of handgun, semi-auto, revolver and single action revolver. Not difficult but there's a certain way they want the checks done and the paperwork completed for the HSC's.

If you are an NRA Certified Instructor, that's all you need to qualify. As others have said, you really need your HSC Instructor certification.

I received an exemption with my NRA Coach Card.

I do not do the HSC because I don't have the time to deal with it.

I obtained a DOJI card so I could administer the handgun safety test.

Yup I reccomend it I got my From Peter at bullseye also, could have lost a lot of sales without it, besides $10.00 profit on each one adds up after a while.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm in the process of getting one & came to this one while searching so I thought better ask here instead of creating a new thread?

I have a friend of mine that's qualified to give me the training, but he wants to know what's like to put in a signed statement/such as certificate after I complete the safety training with him?

Anyone care to PM me their letter/statement (just block/cover your personal info is fine)? You can also email me at t0kie@hotmail.com

Thanks in advance.

Yup, got it on Monday. I felt it would be better for sales if I could administer the HSC myself.

Would you mind PM or email me your certification from the safety training (minus your info of course). Thanks.

Just curious, do you have to have FFL to be a DOJ Certified Instructor?

Yep, any one can do it, If you have your COE you don't have to pay the $14 fee.

I thought so. Someone who did an HSC Instructor course refused me and said I needed FFL to be a HSC Instructor.

That little gem kept me from selling handguns for 3 months. NRA Instructors were exempt from the requirements but NRA Coaches were not. I successfully argued my case and got my card. It only took about 90 days. No one had ever heard of an NRA Coach before.
