Can I bring my AK pistol?

Why not...

I can't wait for the Sgt at the front checking weapons says, "Oh, another one of YOU guys....".

That was friggin precious.

He didn't respond when I asked if he meant a person with a rifle...:p

DedEye

Can I bring my AK pistol?

Please do. I was going to post a request that people bring sample OLLs/firearms, but you beat me to it :).

Please bring examples of various off list rifles and pistols that demonstrate the unique features of California compliance. We've already got at least an AK pistol on its way on Sunday, as well as a couple ARs (MMG and dedicated .22), and at least one AK with fin grip on one day. If Ivan brings a selection of his rifles, we'll probably have plenty on Saturday, at least in the AM :).

If you are comfortable leaving a rifle with us either while you attend the show, or know someone well enough that you can loan them a rifle to keep at the show one or both days, that would also help. Post or PM what you have to offer, as we will be best served with variety. Unique stuff like AK and AR pistols draw crowds, as do any other random and off the wall goodies (anyone got an AOW or C&R SBS they can bring for demonstration purposes?). We can keep your guns "hands off" if you like, but it would help tremendously if you're willing to let people handle them.

Also, if you are planning to bring one of your firearms, a sling is a great thing to have as well. Actually holding the rifle and getting it off the rack to make it more visible is a fantastic conversation starter, as anyone who saw the January show can attest. This will also help if you have a loaner rifle you don't want us to leave unattended, since we can keep it with us at all times.

One suggestion for a presentation concept that has worked beautifully in other areas: you may find you reach a greater cross-section of attendees if other types of firearms are represented at the table as well as the AR/AK platforms. That said, AR/AK pistols are less common and could incite serious interest from those who've just seen 300 rifles at Cold War but nothing that looked like *that*.

Having 20 variations of EBRs at the table may be interesting to some, but how about a slow bolt, lever, python and 1911 (maybe an IPSC open gun?) being there as well?

Last thought- holding an AR rifle may be intimidating for some of the wives/girlfriends who attend with their gun-loving significant other. I'd really like to see us have a less-imposing option for those females interested in something they can use bedside, for plinking or whatever their needs. I'm thinking along the lines of a CZ75/Glock/XD.

Agreed. Showing something for everyone will get us mass appeal. As for pistols, it would be great if people could bring some off roster stuff to show people what isn't available for sale from dealers to non-LEOs (Pink Mosquito, anyone?). A tricked out 1911 or two will be nice for demonstrating to competition folks what they are missing out on, and give them a reason to want to donate. As for the crazy unique stuff, I wonder if PRK will be able to loan us anything as well... ;)

I would also suggest that not everyone carry their rifle in a sling, or carry anything at all (except perhaps pamphlets). As Brandon said, it helps with the approachable factor. At the same time, having at least one or two people holding a firearm where it can be seen and touched also lets the folks not carrying them start conversations with the curious looking onlookers and passersby.

Still, options are always good to have, so we'll have to bring lots of goodies.

I know things like 'business casual, no camo'.

Probably deserves its own thread....

08-21-2009, 06:22 PM
Yah! FAQ for booth noobs (me) please.

Besides the AK I "might" bring a "complete" LaRue AR.
It the LEO at the checkpoint coo with all the AR/AK/EBR come through the gates (legally configured)?

I don't want my baby getting taken away for no good reason.

Is there electrical power at the booth?

A laptop running some of the firearm animations might be amusing.

And I think I can collect the whole Calguns Foundation Wiki and run it locally; maybe - haven't tried it yet. -- Yes, with a little fiddling it works fine, if a bit less pretty than the real thing.

wildhawker
08-21-2009, 10:47 PM
We tried the laptop at the first show, had ~10 or so signups right there the first day. All in all it's tough to work with and talk to people, tend to make your back turn to audience unless you have a separate monitor/tv you're running to.

The FAQ is [still] in the works (I know, I know, it's taking longer than the AR/AK memo...). Until then, please PM a Calgunner who's worked a booth (such as DedEye, Ivanimal, JDBerger, Lateralus, Vladbutsky and SJGunGuy24 from this bunch).

Bring that AR :D.

The door LEOs are used to seeing EBRs. After all, Cold War Shooters tends to work this show and PRK has made at least one appearance in the past. You'll have plenty of support even if you do somehow managed to get hassled.

The booth FAQ is really simple, and can be learned in the 15 minutes before the show. I'm not kidding when I say that it mostly consists of doing what you do here on Calguns. Point people in the right direction to find out about CA gun laws, encourage them to donate to CGF and get active locally and nationally.

It's more about what not to talk about than it is what to talk about. If you can avoid it, try not to talk about non-gun politics. Obviously if someone brings it up and wants to vent you can listen, but you may not agree with them and probably don't want to engage in a protracted debate.

The last Cow Palace show I worked we were set up right next to a Truther booth, so we got a few people with their tin foil hats screwed on tight wander over to us. You don't want to call someone a nut and discourage involvement based on their other views and opinions if they're willing to help fight for the 2nd Amendment with us. Likewise, if someone wants to push for legalizing medical marijuana or gay marriage you don't want to get in a debate and turn away a potential ally from that end of the spectrum either.

In short, do as Bill Wiese advises and avoid mixing issues. We have a hard enough fight as it is to defend our gun rights without distractions and internal strife and disagreements.

Finally, there are certain gun related topics you may want to avoid bringing up due to the sensitivity of the topic or due to the complexity and difficulty explaining it in a 5 minute gun show conversation. Unloaded open carry is a prime example. If someone is interested in the subject, point them to the forum and the wealth of information available on the subject here.

IMPORTANT!

If you do not yet have a Calguns.net Polo and are volunteering at the booth, and would like a polo, you need to log on to http://gunsr4.us/html/polos.html and place your order there.

You can either have the order shipped direct to your house or have it shipped to me with the rest of the booth materials and pick it up from me at the show. The Polos cost $20.

PLEASE TAKE CARE OF THIS TONIGHT OR TOMORROW TO ENSURE YOU RECEIVE YOUR SHIRT BEFORE THIS WEEKEND.

Also, I need someone who can help make a frame for the booth, as I've been informed that the one that we'd planned on using is apparently unavailable. The advice I received was to make it from ABS instead of PVC, as it looks cleaner. I have the schematic if anyone has the skills and tools necessary.

WRT which event (my fault for being unclear); Vick needs to know what coordinator/show to send it to, otherwise your polo may end up in Sacto or San Diego.

ETA: Vick sends to the individual by default IIRC.

Rod

i was wondering this too-dress code?

DedEye
09-14-2009, 06:48 PM
No specific dress code, but the more presentable you look, the better. The de facto uniform is a Calguns polo shirt, so combine a nice shirt (if you don't have a polo) with a clean pair of pants (jeans are fine, but try to stick to a well maintained pair) will be fine.

ROE will be very simple: explain to people what Calguns is and is all about, the efforts of the CGF, the previous successes and future battles, and how they can help out. We'll have demo models of off list toys like ARs/AKs and their pistol variants to pique curiosity, then we can explain to folks about how and why the firearms are legal.

Flowcharts and other printed materials will be available for sale with the proceeds going to CGN/CGF (gotta verify again which group gets proceeds from the sales), while there will be a separate donation till for straight CGF donations. Encouraging people to donate money to CGF and explaining how that money will be used is another duty.

All in all, it's straightforward.

In but shifts unscheduled/tentative: Berto (needs ride to/from nearest BART to Cow Palace, can anyone assist?), Dr. Peter Venkman, Movie_Zombie, TheMPOPresence, Hoffmang, Bwiese

Regarding polo's, I have a bunch on hand ready to ship on short notice. Though I am out of the mens XL I ought to have some in NLT Friday. Price is $20 plus shipping regardless of size from small to 6XL.
I just tapped into a source for sizes up to 10XL, yes that 10 X's on a large.

Also when ordering as Brandon mentioned, let me know which show dates you are working so I can plan the ship dates in order to ensure timely receipt of your order.

FYI, for bookkeeping purposes we'll be keeping straight donations separate from the sales of CGN gear; that said, both the straight donations and net proceeds generated by the booth sales will be given to CGF. Per IRS rules, a portion of your purchase is tax deductible; more info at the booth.

I'd be curious to get some feedback from all the vols as to the percentage of showgoers you speak with that know of CGN/members. Be sure to post your experiences and thoughts after the show!

We *should* be good on the ARs tomorrow, but feel free to bring them just in case. Worst case we keep them stacked up behind the table.

Does anyone have a gunrack though? That would be super nice to have (and super short notice to get :o).

See you Saturday volunteers bright and early tomorrow.

I was planning on dropping by the show on Sunday anyway; I'm a relative novice to all things Calguns, but if you guys are looking for more hands on Sunday afternoon, I'd be more than happy to help out. I can probably do 1:30 or 2pm through closing.

Any help you can provide is always welcome, see you Sunday :).

I went by today, and I didn't see you guys. Did you have a sign up? What kind of things were you talking about, doing? Were you the ones passing out the papers on AB962 and SB585? I just realised that might have been you guys.

To find the booth, enter and take the first straight aisle directly across the floor - don't turn. We're against the far wall, between a custom ear-protection booth and the Titan gun vault booth.

I believe that was NRA passing out the yellow half-sheets, and also they had AB962/SB585 literature (Stop reading now and go call the Governor's phone line; I'll wait .... OK, back? Onward.)

It was nice to meet more people - Dedeye, Lateralis, Quarterboregunner, SJgunguy24, Stormfeather and Dragonfly (and half the kids!), and see others I've met before. Lots of folks dropped by, and I saw several of the vendors wearing our 'proud member of Calguns' stick-ons.

Seemed to do good business in T-shirts. I saw a good number of AW-ID-Flowcharts go out, and the big poster version on the wall was impressive, including Redhorse's avatar where it belongs.

I spent some time trying to recruit vendors as members, and talked to a few passersby at the booth.

It was nice to see everyone at the booth. Didn't have time to hang out as I was still working but I had to share a good story.

As I was walking out I walked by a table that was selling 30 round pmag rebuild kits.
A fellow was looking them over and remarked to the vendor " I thought 30 round magazines were illeagal in CA?"

I then pulled over to listen for fud...

The vendor replied " I can sell them as rebuild kits for guys to repair pre bans they legally owned before the ban."
The patron answered "wow, I never heard of that".
The vendor then replied "you should check out the Calguns booth as they have several lawers there that can answer your questions, thats where I learned about the magazine laws".
I then commented "knowledge is power" then melted into the crowd like a wraith.

LOL> ok, I just added that last part....I ran out of there like a beeotch...had to beat my boss back to the shop before he noticed I was gone. LOL
Good job everyone.

Glad to hear the positive story, Vinz. Nice to see that we're functioning (effectively) as part of the support structure.

I would note that we must make sure everyone knows we're not offering legal advice nor is anyone acting as an attorney (even if they are) through our outreach program, including events like this.

Well, I totally paid for it with the wife later today when she waited a little too long while the little one was squalling. :P

That being said, I didn't even get to cover 1/4 of what I wanted to see at the show, but I'm glad, since I still ended up buying a decent set of earplugs that I'll be using for a very long time.

It was really great to finally put some names with faces, even though I've only been on the forums for a really short time. MrNiceGuy, SJGunGuy24, TheDrickel and his FAL, Librarian, BWiese, QuarterBoreGunner, Vladbutsky, Dedeye: It was a pleasure talking to all of you today, I hope I didn't completely talk your ears off, really wish I could've spent some more time at the show.

On another note, nice work with the booth. Having the flowchart as a prominent part of the booth is always a conversation starter. There was a great sampling of the various featureless and bullet button builds available for reference. It was nice to actually handle a MonsterManGrip, just wish I had a chance to get to duraglock's table to check those out as well. Having two babies there who clearly aren't endangered by those evil black rifles was gravy. :)

As the booth was way in the back of the Cow Palace, it was good to see the various reps walking through the show handing out flyers and dispelling FUD. I sincerely hope that everyone who goes to that show understands the importance of getting the vetoes for AB962 and SB585.

Anyway, back to putting the baby to bed, good luck with the booth tomorrow!

It was great sharing the day and spreading the word with the other volunteers. It was great meeting the faces behind the handles I know here on site.

It was also great seeing another SBL receivered FAL - Thanks to theDrickel!

Pics of the booth crew? I considered it but didn't want to run afoul of the no pic policy, but then CWS brought in their two booth magnets and the pic flashes looked like the red carpet on Oscar night.

Looking forward to the next show.

That SBL was mine actually.

A word of warning, if you take the bolt out of a FAL to make it safe, make sure you understand your safety lever.

On an SBL the markings are in Hebrew or something and I assumed it was like a metric FAL with safe-semi-FA settings but it's actually semi-safe-FA.

The end of the story is that I put it in to semi with the bolt carrier back and the hammer dropped. Then the hammer was blocking the bolt carrier from moving forward, the rat tail of the bolt carrier was too deep in the recoil spring tube to open up the receiver and I didn't have the right tools to take out the receiver pivot bolt.

After fooling around with it for a while I discovered that jamming two plastic Bic pens through the ejection port between the bolt carrier and the hammer will reset the trigger, then you can pull out the pens, move the bolt carrier forward, open up the receiver as normal and replace the bolt.

I'll try not to do that again.

While I was at the show I bought a bunch of ammo, a couple Magpul MOE trigger guards (highly recommended, better than Aluminum), a cheapo scope mount that actually tightens on my A3 upper (the first cheapo didn't fit) and a nice knife.

It was a pretty good show.
