View Full Version : How far can you rebuild a magazine?

Sounds like a pretty stupid question at first, but how much of a legally owned hi-cap magazine can you rebuild? Are you only allowed to use the spring, follower, and base plate? If the body were to be damaged, could it legally be replaced with one purchased as part of a kit?

I am not currently in this situation, so this is just an academic discussion. Replies of "who would know" won't be a helpful contribution.

You can rebuild it completely, till it is a new magazine.

This is one of those things that can go in circles, as long as you are actually using part to replace parts you already legally own, then you are legal.

Ah yeah, the middle of the month; time for another one of these threads.

No offense to the OP but they do seem to happen regularly.

You'd think there'd be a "Sticky" in the handgun, rifle and legal forums by now.

Yeah, you'd think it'd be stickied (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=56818) in the "New To Calguns? Check Here First! (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/forumdisplay.php?f=63)" forum, or something..

Someone should get on that...

Do people actually go there after their first time or two here? The OP has over 100 posts and chances are they aren't hanging around the "New to Calguns" thread much these days.

But every other week or so, this question shows up in the handgun, rifle or legal sections.

Thank you all for the guidance. Yes, been here awhile and didn't think to go back to the noob section. I thought I was being fairly original with my question. I'd be embarrassed if there wasn't so much info to sift through.

I recently visited stores in another state just to see what I was missing and was blasted because there were so many laws to memorize in order to fight the good fight in our beloved, yet much-maligned-by-outsiders, state.

As for this middle-of-the-month conspiracy, what the heck is that all about?

It never goes well when you try to talk to an out of state FFL about stuff. I remember when I was at bullseye in san rafael. I was doing a PPT. The employee there was talking with me and the buyer and we were talking about the mag laws. I was telling them I was happy I got some g18 mags but feel stupid because I should have gotten a lot more different mags. Well anyways the story is the employee took a trip to another state and wanted to check out an ar or fal, something we can get here. Mid way of handing the rifle over the guy asks where is he from, he says CA and the rifle goes back on the rack. The guy then says, oh you are from CA you can't get this anyways so you can't touch it.

The nerve...

Ah that's just me being a jerk; it seems that the same questions are posted with clockwork regularity. I understand the desire for immediate feedback but most if not all of these questions can be answered completely, with relevant PC citied, by doing a little bit of search and reading.

You'd be surprised how hard it is to find a relevant thread with simple search terms.

But yes, I still managed to ignore the stickies.
