Im going to build a home defense / brush shotgun. As I purchase different components I will post them here. I will show you guys time line pictures as it comes together. It will be done different and will not be your typical tactical shotgun. It will take some time because Im not sure if this will work with that. I'll explain later. In my minds eye it's already done.

LOL...maybe we should start a bet going to see if capitol completes the project or ends up selling all these accessories on calguns.

Question for you, you are buying all these accessories but you sure they fit the 870?
Also how long is the project going to be?
What is your timeline like (when is the deadline)?

Tony,
I've purchased and have in hand everything listed. I hit a MAJOR snag on this project because a dealer tried selling me an 870 Express for $375 and tell me it's a Police Shotgun http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
Thats a long story, but I'll take some real picture of all this stuff tonight.

I started ANOTHER 10 day waiting period on a Remy 870 Police Shotgun model 4077 today. I took a few pictures of the items together.
The stock in this picture is closed(10"LOP)
http://hometown.aol.com/cingmore/myhomepage/p1010039.jpg

This is the backside of the shell holders. They are sold by Mesa Tactical and are made from aluminum. I'm already having thoughts about how heavy this gun is going to be. This will be bad in the field and good for recoil. A comfy and quick shouldering sling will be a must.
http://hometown.aol.com/cingmore/myhomepage/p1010023.jpg?

I havent decided on the grip yet, but I have narrowed it down to these two.
http://publish.hometown.aol.com/cingmore/myhomepage/p1010024.jpg

Here is the ACE stock extended(13"LOP)and the other grip installed.
http://publish.hometown.aol.com/cingmore/myhomepage/p1010030.jpg

If everything goes as planned I will have the shotgun and this bad boy together by the 20th http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

How much heavier is that thing gonna be above and beyond the 870p your buying?

My guess is 2-4lbs. Most of the weight coming from the mesa shell holders carring 12 rounds.
I also "think" the shotgun may be front heavy even with a short 18" barrel. To even things out I may go with a recoil reducer in the tube of the stock. Im eye balling an Edwards MAX Recoil Reducer for the job.

It's FINALLY done! The shotgun did not just drop into place though. I had SERIOUS trouble fitting the Calvary Arms AR conversion to the metal trigger guard. I think the conversion may be designed for the plastic tg's. The TG would not drop back in the conversion far enough to line up the cross pins.

Broke out the Dremel and started cutting away. What you see here is the finished product. Three plus hours easily of work to get it just right. I would grind away one area and another would hit. This went on for awhile.
http://hometown.aol.com/cpc1168/myhomepage/p1010064.jpg

The left side of the TG was ok, but the right side and up over the safety hole was a B eye itch.
http://hometown.aol.com/cpc1168/myhomepage/p1010061.jpg

All of my care and patience did pay off though. The final product doesnt show any cutting http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
http://hometown.aol.com/cpc1168/myhomepage/p1010096.jpg

Other side.
http://hometown.aol.com/cpc1168/myhomepage/p1010092.jpg

NEXT problem! The Surefire forend over lapped the receiver and hit the shell holders. I knew this may happen and wasnt suprised when it did.
Dremel to the rescue. I cut one piece of the SF rail off and did a lil sanding. No biggie really.
http://hometown.aol.com/cpc1168/myhomepage/p1010072.jpg

Here is a picture of the rail cut back.

It's not even noticed with the rail cover on.
http://hometown.aol.com/cpc1168/myhomepage/p1010027.jpg

You can see here I didnt have much clearance when done.

Neat.

Question for you, why did you decide to trim the trigger guard instead of relieving the CavArms adapter?

capitol
08-26-2005, 7:19 AM
esskay,
The CavArms adapter cost $200 and the trigger guard cost $90. I figured if I mess up I would rather replace the $90 part.
If I would have cut on the adapter I would have ruined it. The tg is wider then the adapter.

esskay
08-26-2005, 4:22 PM
Got it, the relative pricing of the two items actually occurred to me this morning... when I first posted I had the entire 870P in mind rather than just the trigger group.

It is interesting about the size of the trigger group on the 870P. I recently got an 870P as well, tried to test fit my KAC 870RAS on it, and I couldn't get the KAC mounting ring to work with the parkerized barrel, it was too bulky.

Another question for you, what is the overall length with the stock collapsed?

Holy cow! You say that's for home defense? Just what kind of home are you defending?

I sure hope Al Quida doesn't sneak into your home and steal this while you're away at work or something. We'd all be in trouble!

So...no Vang Comp barrel job? What's up?

Nice job. I don't know much about shotguns but I know that thing looks sweet.

Ivan,
The shotgun patterns well. Wolf slugs were fine and accurate at 25 yards. The Eotech was dialed in from the start. Plenty of looks at the range. I wonder what some of the old timers are thinking http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

jackdaniels,
Everything except the gun was purchased online.

Rhiannon,
I admit this isn't an ideal HD gun and it will not be used as such.
Vang Comp may be in the future. It depends how much the barrel rises when shooting quickly.

It's fun to shoot http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I built up a similar gun soon after the SST-870 stock adapters came out.

http://192.220.68.196/870-1.jpg

Built on an 870 Express Security model. I didn't have to trim anything. Everything just fit. SST-870 stock adapter, Tacstar side saddle, Eotech sight, Surefire M69 rail, Insight M3 tactical light, no-name vertical grip.

It is fun to shoot and makes for a good conversation piece. While out in the boondocks with some friends, shot some clays with it, and even managed to hit a few.

pidooma,
The Express model 870's come with a plastic trigger guard and I believe the SST-870 is designed for that particular model.
The 870P models have metal TG's and are a lil larger as I found out.

I've tried (two) of the Tacstar side saddles on a different shotgun. It's down right embarrassing when firing the gun and they break off. That's the reason I went with the metal shell holders. Unfortunately, the shell holder extends right up to the end of the receiver and the M69 overlaped it http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Sounds great capitol! I have hit consistently 3-4 inches low and dead center at 100 yards with my brenneke slugs. I was trying them out for my Alaska trip. The 870 stayed home but I was impressed neverless. My Browning Gold Hunter went with me instead, faster follow up shots ya know.

Sweet shotgun! I like how the stock is completely horizontal with the reciever. I was looking at the Tac Star ones and they slant down and looks funny....

Man, I just picked up an FN Tactical Police shotgun because I thought it was the nastiest looking SG I had ever seen. So much for that!
