Colt Detective Special that is!

Picked this 1962 unfired snubbie up a few weeks ago for $450, came with the warrenty card and manual, no box. It sat under a little old ladies bed for almost 50 years (a little old lady from Pasadena, I kid you not).

The grips are a bit dirty and dry. How should I clean them up? I'm afraid that if I use some wood oil that they may crack, being so dry and all. Any suggestions?

Much love to the pony!:)

I go with a stiff toothbrush to get any / all surface dirt off. I would avoid abrasives unless there is some really nasty gouge that screams for sandpaper. Follow it up with a few light coats of linseed oil. That should liven up the wood and not cause any damage.

That Detective Special is a fine score indeed, but I have to ask... is that a big old thumbprint on the sideplate under the rampant colt?

Lol! That is an impression in the oil from the foam in the case I store it in! I thought about rubbing it down before I took pictures, don't know why I didn't. There is hardly a mark on this snubbie, not even really a cylinder ring.:)
