View Full Version : Remingtom 7400 in .308 as a poor man's battle rifle?

Remington's autoloading 7400 in synthetic can be ordered for under $400.

Curious about these...
1.) Are they durable if you shoot it a lot?
2.) How's their accuracy at 100?
3.) Will they shoot military surplus?
4.) Can you mount a scope solidly?

Any thoughts on its use as a CA battle rifle? Since for most .308 autoloaders we have to pay through the nose?

4.) Can you mount a scope solidly?

#1 durability is there worst problem
#2 they can shoot about 2 inches at 100 yards
#3 they are chambered for 308win NOT 7.62 nato
#4 the scope mount will be solid

don't waste your money. you can have a cali fal for not much more if you shop around.

Dimension-wise, .308WIN and 7.62NATO are identical and can be interchanged in a pinch.

HOWEVER, .308 is rated at higher pressures than 7.62NATO (the higher pressures are usually found in hunting ammo). So, while you CAN shoot 7.62NATO surplus ammo in a rifle chambered for .308, it is NOT adviseable to reverse it (.308 ammo in a 7.62NATO chambered surplus rifle), ESPECIALLY when dealing with the hot-rodded hunting ammo and a surplus semi-auto.

As an aside, the REVERSE is true for .223Rem and 5.56NATO. .223Rem has tighter chamber tolerances, which may lead to overpressure when using the hotter 5.56NATO ammo.

the manuel for my savage 10fp in 308win states do not fire 7.62nato. 308win is a slightly tighter chamber.you can shoot it in a pinch as you say but there can be overpressure problems. check out the ammo oracle on ar15.com

damn if i could find a ~$400 FAL, ****, id buy 3! im certain the FAL is better but for $400? i couldnt find any, century FALs are not legal, by name, as far as i remember and if you build up your kit, it will be around ~600, with the cheapest parts

may bet lucky ofcourse but i wouldnt count on it

Maybe $600 if you have the tools & gages. Lately it looks like you'll also wait for a while if you want a receiver in the $200 range.

The 740/7400 series needs rigorous cleaning & takes patience during reassembly; so for those reasons it's not the same an a FAL-clone. Accuracy varies widely from gun to gun. IF you get a good one, you've spent half the cost of a good shooter FAL.

They will shoot 7.62, but the .308 is not as forgiving as the NATO chamber. Good scope mounts are not a problem. You will gain weight with the FAL. The 7400 is a pretty graceful gun, and the early 740's with the thin barrel and plain walnut stock are beautiful.

I'd give you the alternative of a 760/7600, again with the oldest furniture I could find. A couple companies (I think) do 10-round magazines. Price range $300 * up. Reliable, still some pissy disassembly, doesn't need a lot of cleaning. I can get 1" or smaller groups at 100 in both .257 and .270 sizes, I wish I had a .308 and perhaps a .243.

The Ammo Oracle at ARFCOM describes only .223 vs 5.56. Here's one explanation between .308 and 7.62NATO: LINK (http://www.fulton-armory.com/308.htm)

SAAMI chambers will always be tighter than military chambers, simply because military chambers need to work with a large variety of ammunition.

.308/7.62NATO is DIFFERENT from .223/5.56NATO in that in the larger caliber, the commercial ammo is loaded hotter than the military version (50,000 PSI for military, 62,000 PSI for commercial).

At the SAAMI website (http://www.saami.org/unsafe3.htm), it lists that one should not fire 5.56NATO ammo in a rifle chambered for .223, but has NO such warning for .308/7.62NATO.

They're not that bad -- but don't plan on using it below 30 degrees -- do plan on cleaning it alot (like that's a chore guys) and you get to use DETACHABLE 10 round magazines instead of dealing with the PRK FAL stripper clip BS which is the same reason I don't have a SAD, sorry FAB-10.

I have a model 760 in 30-06 I hit a squirrel with it at 175 yards. I dont know if I could ever do that again. The rifle normally gets 1 inch groups with tailored loads, at 100 yards. I must say it likes the hotter ammo rather than the slow stuff. The only reason I am responding to this thread is they are basically the same gun. Mine is a pump and the 7400 is the same lockup and barrel on a semi auto.

http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Where? I think you're off a bit on that price. When I was looking for my first rifle one of the guys at Retting tried to talk me in to the $7400, at like $550.

Yes Basura I've read that suggestion. http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif So what? It was a suggestion. I've discussed this with Ted personaly. Have you? Imagine if every one who put a suggestion in a suggestion box took as much heat as a few of you gave Ted. Get over it! At least Ted comes here using his real name.

BTW, I'll talk prices all I want unless the mods here stop me, and I still say "under $400" for a new 7400 is BS. http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

If by "personaly"(sic) you mean face to face, no. Otherwise yes, I have.
Point?

Imagine if every one who put a suggestion in a suggestion box took as much heat as a few of you gave Ted.

It was more than just a simple suggestion and plenty defended Ted's position too.

Get over it!

I'll choose to get over it when I see a retraction of the idea (the "suggestion").
Further, when a number of promotional posts keep popping up with certain free advertising in them, I feel less and less inclined to do so (i.e. "get over it") even if the above is met.

At least Ted comes here using his real name.

Point?
Most people here post under usernames and handles for good reason. If I owned a business like Ted's, I'd feel differently about disclosure of such information as it helps rather than hinders him and would likely do the same for me.

...but if you want my real name, you can email me.

BTW, I'll talk prices all I want unless the mods here stop me,

As will I and most others here on this forum. It is usually a big part of the discussion.

and I still say "under $400" for a 7400 is BS. http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I can recall seeing 7400s and the older models for in the mid $300s on Gun Broker.

What better excuse than some guy on an Internet forum told you to get a girlfriend?! She'll understand you had to do it to defend your internet honor.

Thanks for doing the math.

I attempted to do the same, but I got stumped on converting months to days and then the long division finally did me in for good. (I skipped a lot of school that I felt was unnecessary).

Ain't that the truth.
It's bad enough when I lug home some combination of metal/wood/plastic that goes bang.
