+1,000,000 for the M590A1 if you want a real Millitary shotgun... go Mossberg.

I have a couple of Mosseberg 590's with ghost ring rear sights and they are tops for home defense or up close and personal. Lots of fire-power and very dependable as matter of FACT!!!:)

If you're looking between the 500 and the Charles Daly, I'd go with the 500. I know nothing about the Daly, but there's a huge aftermarket for the 500 series over the Daly.

I use and abuse my Mossy 500 like I stole it and it keeps going and going after years of abuse.

My Rem 870 has blasted more jack rabbits then I can remember and I have NEVER cleaned it.

Benelli M3 runs great but will hick up if not cleaned.

Rem 11-87 rides on the front of my quad and gets shaken to death not to mention all the dirt, weeds and even grasshoppers in the action and she still will kick out shotgun hulls faster then I can pull the trigger.

Mossbergs are such great military guns the Marines went back to 870's.........I am sure that for 99% of people they are fine but do not come close to the 870 for durability or parts availability

How do you come to that idea?

Here's a quote from here: http://www.mossberg.com/press/pdf/49.pdf

There have been other tests where Remington never even tried to compete with the Mossberg because they didn't want to risk getting beat out.

North Haven, CT (January, 2008) – When the NYPD decides to equip its 36,000-man
police force with a new duty shotgun, it is a monumental task and one that is not to be
taken lightly. After all, officers’ lives are at stake. So when the city decided recently to
adopt the venerable Mossberg® 590® as its new police duty shotgun, it serves as a
testament to its ruggedness and reliability.
Taking models from the top shotgun manufacturers, members of NYPD’s Firearms &
Tactics Section began a series of extensive tests spanning a two-year period. The
evaluation process basically consisted of two phases. During Phase One the
instructors paralleled the original U.S. Military test. They fired 1500 slugs and 1500 00
Buck for a total of 3000 2 ¾ inch shotshells. The Mossberg 590A1 passed this first test
with flying colors.
With the initial testing completed, the process entered Phase Two, which consisted of
real world use by actual street officers from the NYPD. As a part of their regular
firearms training, the patrolmen were issued Mossberg 590’s and duty ammunition,
which they then ran through various exercises. By the time the final order was placed,
approximately 12,000 rounds of ammunition had been fired. Again, no functional
problems whatsoever.

For a good and reliable shotgun: Remington & Benelli & Mossberg & Winchester are better than Charles Daley.
If only this was available I would suggest this:
Franchi LAW-12 Shotgun- one of the best ever made! And was the first banned in California.

The Mossberg 500 is a good gun, but I'll go with the Remington 870.

You never stated a purpose for said shotgun. If you have ignore my post.

That being said my favorite shotgun I own is the Winchester SX3 in 12g. Next I want a decent over/under.
