Well, this IS handgun related...

Was bike riding with the little one, when I saw a sandwich board saying "Center Mass Shooting Range opening soon." Stopped on by, spoke with Ed, the owner (?). They're gonna pick up where The Shooting Gallery left off, except 'better'. Planned opening date of 15Aug. Gonna have pistol ranges of course, sales, etc.

Wanted to give everyone in the Vaca area a heads up.

Same spot as The Shooting Gallery. 27 Commerce Place, Vacaville. 449-GUNS.

I'm with you, leelaw. Actually, Ed and I talked for a couple on just that point. He's aware of GF&OS's reputation, both price-wise and personnel-wise. FWIW, I offered him my take on what would make his venture more successful and he concurred.

Can't wait for it to open...open open open!

Cool, I took my hunters safety course there. Even though I haven't personally had a problem with Guns Fishing & other stuff, it will be nice to have another option. Competition is usually a good thing.

Yahoo!!!! I'm gonna have to do a drive by after they open...... Wait let me re-phrase that..... Heck, ya'll know what I mean. So where did this "Ed" come from? Has he been in the gun business before? Did he seem PPT friendly? OLL friendly? I hope he doesn't plan on hiring some of the cronies from Guns, Fishing and other Junk, some of those guys just stink. Well this is interesting news indeed.

I'm all for a group opening...only concern is Ed said the plan was to open on the 15th. Things happen that delay openings.

Since I'm only like 5 minutes away from Center Mass, I'll keep everyone updated as best as I can on an actual, more accurate date.

I was bummed when the Gallery closed up. Pulled up there one day with my 44 to do a little plinking, and the sign on the door said, "closed for business". That was a sad day. I've hurled a lot of lead and copper in that building, and even purchased the aforementioned 44 there. I am ready!!!:chris:

How far out can you shoot?

The Shooting Gallery had a 25yd indoor range, so I'd assume it will be the same distance in under the new name.

I might go there to shoot if it's raining or over 100 deg, but I prefer shooting outside at YSA. I will however be in there to buy guns. I refuse to purchase anything from GFOS, and I'm very happy that they now have some competition. Maybe GFOS will lower their prices to MSRP now.

I was a member of Shooting Gallery for many years (over 15) right to the point they closed shop. Loved the place, loved the people they had for employees. Bought many firearms there, new and used...ahhhh memories!

I used to drive out there and take my son's shooting. Tried a lot of the range rental pistols there. They were great. I took a couple of my son's friends out to that range for their first time shooting. And, like others i bough a few from them. I buy everywhere though - if they have something I get the itch for I'll do whatever paper dance they want.

This is GREAT News! Thanks. See you after the 15th though - I'm busy that Saturday.

Still not open. Called today...said there's range ammo, targets, etc., but no guns as yet. There were problems with DOJ timelines, he said; those have been resolved, and Center Mass has received clearance to open. Yet again they're looking at a "next-weekend" opening, but that depends greatly on whether they can get stocked up in time. Their website is www.centermassshooting.com. Nothing there to speak of, just a "Coming Soon" page.

I'll keep you guys informed...

Hours: Mon-Sat, 1000-2000
Sun, 1000-1800

PPT fees: $35

They'll do consignments, plus buy and sell used guns.

OLL friendly: They are OLL friendly...need to clear it with their insurance, however.

25 and 50 yard ranges are open to the public. $8 per hour, or $5 for a half hour. Ranges can be reserved, but no more than 2 weeks in advance.

Nothing larger than a 44 mag, power-wise...no 460s or 500s. That, they said, will change in time.

There will be a reloading section in time. Also, reloading classes will be offered.

Lots of training available...stuff like hunter's safety, home defence, personal defence, etc. Forgot all the classes. Also, they said female students would get female instructors.

No guns in stock yet. Stuff's on the way.

Swung by there on the way home from work today. The shop is bare but the range is open. They're waiting on stock, but have a few guns for rent and ammo available if you're shooting only (no resale yet, but it's coming). The guys there are great and I can't wait until they get everything up and running. They are taking special orders on guns now and it sounds like their prices will be pretty reasonable. They do have memberships available. Think I'll give the range a try this weekend! Check it out!

Stopped by today to try out my new 1911 and reloads, seems the new owner is a real stand up guy. Store is empty right now but the range is open. Got my hour and three targets for $10. I would suggest anyone in the area that shoots at Gun and fishing to go and patronize the new shop in Vacaville as it is always good to have competition for us consumers. Lee, seems like he really wants Centermass to be customer service orientated. He said if I'm ever treated bad in his store to tell him and he would be more than happy to send the rude employee to work in the back away from customers. He seems well aware of the treatment many have gotten over at the "other" gun store in vacaville.

No rifle rounds...only the usual pistol/revolver rounds up to 44 mag. Can't go above 44 mag in power levels, so that excludes 454 Casull, 480 Ruger, 460 and 500 S&W, etc. Their armor won't handle it. Ed did say there will be armor upgrades in the future.

Hey, Sammy...not arguing with you, but: I remember seeing signage inside the range that reads if brass goes forward of the firing station it's theirs. If it lands at your feet or behind you it's yours. It's not reasonable to expect people to snatch brass out of the air like Karate Kid, and these guys seem reasonable. Maybe someone with a better mem'ry can pipe in???

you have to relize they are liable for if you get hurt from down range mishaps!!

I swung by the range today for some target practice. I was the first and only person there around 1pm. Another shooter came in after about half-hour. The shop was neat and clean. The staff was very friendly and the prices were reasonable ($8/hr, $2 for 3 targets). There were a few guns in the cases and catalogs on the counter. There was some ammo available, but I didn't inquire about the price or calibers. I think they will also be renting guns there too.

I felt the range could use some updating and better lighting. For some reason it seemed like the ventalation wasn't up to par - and it was only me in there.

I enjoyed the experience and would recommend it for an indoor range.

I had to sight in a few of my 1911s, so I visited the range this past Sunday. It was nice to meet the owner, his daughter, and the owner's dad. Very personable people and cop-friendly.

It was nice not to have to deal with the crowds like at Guns N Fishing; the air system worked fine for us in Range B. In fact, I think it was quieter and more efficient than the one at Bullseye in San Rafael.

As for the brass, no problem there. I agree with the unspoken rule: if it lands forward of the firing line, it stays there. If it's in my area behind the line, it goes home with me since I brought it.

I also have my own match targets, so there wasn't a problem with my using my own paper either. I recall years ago at Jackson Arms how they got into a snit because I wouldn't buy their stuff. Well, they didn't have reduced targets for 50 feet otherwise I would have made the purchase. They also wouldn't let me shoot my own targets. I quit going there for that reason.

I enjoy going to Bullseye, but the idea of not having to cross the bridge from Valley Joe is more appealing. For cost effectiveness, I'll probably get a membership at Center Mass.

Was at Center Mass today for the first time since Shooting Gallery closed with my nephew window shopping for his first gun and 600 rounds down range. And I must say it was a great expirience compared to GFOS. VERY friendly service and no hassles and rube comments. Although a little further from were we live in Fairfield, we will be taking our business there from now on rather than the other place. :)

I have shot at the old shooting gallery but am not a real fan of indoor ranges. I agree with the guy who said YSA is the hot setup.

+1 for Centermass. It's a really nice family-run business with none of the bad attitude you get so much at indoor ranges. I think their fees, including ppt, are reasonable.

I'm going to bring one of my GFs there this Saturday to give her an idea that there's another range in Vacaville. Guns & Fishing is way too crowded and too chaotic to get much done.

Since it's usually not too busy at Center Mass, no one is going to harass a group of girls who want to practice.

I brought a friend and his wife to Center Mass today. We had been to Guns, Fishing, and Other Stuff about a month ago because they had a wide selection of rentals. I suggested we try out Center Mass. I had been to Center Mass when they had first opened.

The shop is well stocked now. They have good prices on guns and ammo. The range was very clean, organized, and VERY well lit! You can tell they put a lot of effort into cleaning up the range and getting it well lit. I noticed they had a few guns for rent. They also had a few consignment guns in the cases. We were treated well and the employees were friendly and had a great attitude. I think it was even cheaper than GFOS.

As we left the shop, my buddy said he really like Center Mass and that he isn't going back to GFOS. I feel the same way.
