View Full Version : How many firearms is the right number for YOU?

I always love the posts where you need to give your "top 3,4,5 choices". I want to do something slightly different in this thread. What is the rightnumber of firearms for you? I certainly enjoy big collections that some of my friends have and enjoy when I get to play with them at the range. Having said that, I do have some I have bought over the years that I really don't shoot anymore and some I regret getting and others I don't.
So, I'm not asking how many you have per se, but what do you think is the perfect number for you? I need to think before I can answer this myself.
The amount that i can properly secure, store, and care for.

I would guess around around 10 or 12 I would be satisfied with, but if they made me sell what I have then I would say I would stay with 6 (or 7 )

Honestly, I could probably get by with 7-8 handguns and probably 13-14 rifles and 3-4 shotguns.

I was just contemplating this idea the other day, and I came to the conclusion that I could get by with only four guns - a pistol, a precision rifle, an AR-15, and a shotgun. I think this is a pretty good variety of guns and could keep me occupied for the rest of my life. Of course, I don't plan on restricting myself to only these four guns, but I could get by with only these four if I had to.

Always 1 or 2 more than I currently have. I only have 6 so maybe that will stop happening after a few more.

PErfect? Since I don't really have space limitations, but do have budget limitatinos I have no idea what the perfect # is. I think I could be happy and content with about a dozen if I had to put a limit on things

Well I would keep everything I got. The shotty, M1 Garand, POF5.56, POF.308,if CA "ever" lifts the BMG ban an M82A1orM107 for me. for the wife the good ol 5.7 pistol and PS90. And as much ammo as my truck can carry!

I dont see an upper limit in my future
If I see one I like I buy it
I could live with one rifle, shotgun, and pistol. But Id be severly depressed.

How many can your safes hold? If you can answer that without thinking, you need a few more safes!

I break it down by type...
I want one poly handgun
I want one metal handgun
I want one DA revolver
I want one SA revolver
I want one modern bolt action rifle
I want one C&R bolt action rifle
I want one modern self loading rifle
I want one C&R self loading rifle
So far I've got my poly and metal handguns... 2 down 6 to go!
Bird of Fire
07-24-2009, 2:12 PM
I would need....
1 pump shotgun
1 semi auto shotgun
1 22 handgun
1 1911 in 45
1 9mm full size
1 conceal carry gun
1 38/357 revolver
1 44 mag revolver
1 precision bolt gun in 308
2 mosins
2 AR's in 223
1 ak variant
1 10/22
....I think that's all.
So 15 would be what I absolutely need. You can't play a round of golf with just a putter so....
all of them... ?
I dont see an upper limit in my future

+1 and the design for the gun room is pending. :)
I see myself easily owning 4-500+ by my old age if I make it to old age, I'm already in triple digits. Only storage space and finances generally hold me back. I've been more selective in what I purchase lately though and have been doing more of the quality over quantity lately.

For a family of three or four:
3 Pistols:
One self-loader, preferably small and light enough to be fairly easy to conceal should the ability to do so legally ever be possible. Prefer .45 ACP, but this limits the choices with regard to size.
One revolver, in a cartridge with some serious knockdown / utility power. .357 is a good baseline.
One .22 for small game or target / plinking / practice.
3 Rifles:
One battle rifle. Preferably self-loading with detachable box mag, pump with a detachable box mag would be preferable to bolt - think Remington 760.
One hunting or target rifle. Bolt action, powerful enough to take large game.
One .22 rifle. Preferably self loading, but any number of different action styles are fine. Plinker / target / small game / practice.
One or two shotguns:
One home defense shotgun. Nothing extreme, pump action, 18" - 20" barrel, at least 5+1 rounds.
One hunting shotgun. Could be same as HD shotgun with an interchangeable barrel.
7 to 8 firearms. I'm way short of this, but I live by myself and do not hunt, and seldom get to the range. I keep two firearms for HD, one other lurks in the closet and hardly ever is used.
Money is the major limiting factor.

Asking how many guns would satisfy you is like asking how much money would satisfy you. You just never think you're quite THERE.

300 sounds about right. Enough to devote an entire room of the house, but not so many that I lose track of them.
Lol, I only have three right now, so I better get crackin'.

Shortly after I think I have all the guns I need, I find that I absolutely need at least one more.
In March, I thought I had all the guns I needed. Today, I need six more.
As always, that doesn't include the ones needed to replace what I recently lost in a tragic boating accident. (I have to learn to stay away from those damn boats.)

I can't put a limit on how many. There is just so much out there that anyone would want. Hell, you can start with 1911s, then glocks, you gotta have a cz75, revolvers, shotguns, ARs, AKs, rifles, c&r stuff. The list just keeps on going. You can have like 15 mosins and still want more!!

All I 'need' is one rifle or one handgun. I can pretty much take care of whatever I need to with either one, both have their +/-.

Since I 'only' have three handguns, an AR and a shotgun, about 12 sounds right. But I'm sure when I'm at 12 about 24 would seem right, and so on

I've been thinking the same exact thing lately, ever since I sold my SKS I told myself that with finances and space factored that I should streamline that this was my exact conclusion.
.308, 5.56, .40, 12gauge
I day dream of having a big safe stock full of choice rifles, but this is what I could live with.

The right number is one more than I have right now. The same holds for mags and ammo. 1 more Mag and 1K more in ammo than I have right now.

It's kinda like asking "how many stocks should you own" -- the useful answer is "as many as you are comfortable buying".
It's all about diversification -- and having enough room to store them securely..
--Neill
the answer is always "One More" :D
