total newb hereand i have a question, and didnt know where to ask it. so mods please move if necessary. my great uncle bought a pistol a back in the 80's i believe and ended up with my grandma when he died. when she died it went to my mom who then gave it to me recently. they said he bought it and never used it and it looks pretty clean but they said when he bought it he didnt have to register it. so now that i have it, i have to pay $20 dollars and fill out the doj form but wouldnt that be the same as registering it? doesnt just buying a weapon in CA become registered through the dros process?

Welcome to the board. You could try the search engine asking about registration. Otherwise, someone will come along shortly and help you out. I can't help, because what I would do is not what this crazy state is demanding we do. Again welcome.:)

Handguns are registered during DROS, long guns are not registered during DROS.
During the late-90s, it became mandatory for handguns transfered through intra-familial gifting to be reported ("registered") with CA DOJ BOF.
Since, your mom recently gave you a handgun, you are required to send in a Report of Operation of Law or Intra-familial Handgun Transaction (http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/oplaw.pdf) with $19 to CA DOJ BOF.

forgiven-thanks and yeah i checked and i got everything under the sun accept what i was looking for.
quiet-thats what i figured id have to do. id rather not but if anything ever did happen id rather not go to jail for an unregistered gun.
You also have to get a handgun safety certificate. You can get one at any firearms dealer.

I'd register it and let it sit. Post up some pictures of it. Tell us about it. Be pretty cool to see something in good shape after all those years.
