Hi, I have an HK SP89 that I would like to convert into a rifle. Change the barrel to a 16 inch add a folding stock and a vertical grip, is this allowed in California?

No, you would be manufacturing an assault rifle.

In order for his SP89 to be legal in California, it would have to be a registered as an assault weapon anyway. The SP89 was HK's semi-auto pistol version of their MP5K, so the mag well is external to the pistol grip.

Once registered as an assault weapon, always an assault weapon.

Why you'd want to do something like that is beyond me. Even in the rest of the country, an SP89 would command a fair price unmolested.

Please Please Please don't do that. It's like going and painting a clown face on the Mona Lisa.

Just buy a 9mm carbine instead but don't do anything like convert a SP89 over to a rifle.

+1, Im sure the semi auto MP5 isnt that practical but the cool factor tops the scale. One more vote to buy another 9mm carbine.

Well mutilating SP89s is sacrilege.

The SP89, IIRC, a Type III "by features" AW in CA. It wasn't part of the orig Roberti-Roos 1989 list of 54 (?) guns. Removing its pistol grip renders it into non-AW status.

Woulda been nice if SP89 had longer barrel (more muzzle velocity, longer sight radius).

[I'm kicking myself. I had an FFL a long time ago (for personal consumption) and SP89s were $800. Shoulda bought ten of 'em. Of course, I paid only $475 from Vollmer's for my 'demo' HK91.]

Overpriced, over-rated, over-weight 9mm Pistol.

Other than that, they are way Bad-*** and accurate as hell.http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

When I first encountered the HK SP-89, they were going for $1100 used at the gun store.

My personal dream gun is a HK MP5 PDW, It'll probably be my first exspensive Airsoft that I buy.http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
