When i make ammo and i pour gunpowder into the case there is always space left for more powder. This is normal i know. What i always wondered is why is that space there. Why dont you make the case shorter so there is little space left. Which will translate to shorter rounds ...

I dont know if you guys get what i mean....

that space is needed for combustion.

and different powders have different volumn, some powders do fill up the case.

some loadings are compressed loads but often the safe loadings are mild there always seems to be a multitude of powders to choose from so the extra room gives greater flexibility for granule size

Neither black or smokeless gunpowder need space for combustion. It is fully self contained to consume itself: providing it's own fuel and oxygen.

Cartridge size has more to do with safe chambering and/or loading than powder levels.

Different rounds were developed with different powders typically not available to the reloader, some of the old ones like the .45 Colt were made before smokeless powder and the black powder takes up more space.

When reloading, it's always a good idea to use a load that more than half fills the case to both prevent an overload (case overflows) and to allow enough density of charge to ignite reliably.

I think it's there for special ingridients.

The powder needs room to party?
