So the wife decided to suprise me with a weekend in Reno in August. It just so happens to be the same weekend (14-16) that the gun show will be going on. I am just curious if right now it would be worth the time going to it if all I would plan on buying is some ammo. I dont have a need for any AR or AK parts etc. Just figured I would pick up some bulk ammo for my various calibers. But from the last time I remember reading the lines were super long to get in and by the time most people were able to get in, in the morning most of the good deals/ common calibers were already sold out. I would be looking at picking up factory ammo, no reloads.
Just curious to hear from the guys that go to the shows, would it be a waste of a hangover to stand inline to buy ammo that wouldn't be available when I finally get to the tables or should I just stay at the Blackjack table and enjoy loosing my money?
And if it even matters, I would be picking up:
.40 S&W
.45 ACP
9mm
7.62x39
7.62x54r

I haven't bought a lot of ammo at the Reno show, but the times I've gone it's been well priced. However, we've all heard the stories lately about how people have been swarming the Miwall table and that it can be pretty crazy.

Honestly, the show is worth it to go just to see the massive size of it, even if you don't buy anything. Especially if you're already going to be in town, swing by and pay the $10 or whatever and check it out. Buying an actual gun there requires a transfer to a CA FFL and all, but if it's a good deal or maybe something that you had been looking for, maybe that's the way to go. The place is also good for parts and accessories too. I've never seen a gun show that was even half the size of the Big Reno Show.

I went to the last show, all three days. Don't ask why. I recommend you go on Friday, get there waaay early. A lot of the guys brought hand trucks. It was a stampede to Miwall's when the doors opened. They were out of .223 and 9 mil by Saturday afternoon. Most of the guys there were respectable to each other but bring a bottle of chill pills. It's going to be a long day.

yep, and honestly I dont want to spend my 3 day vacation with the wife like that. I love shooting and competeing, dont get me wrong, but I dont feel like having my wife wait inline with me ( or me waiting alone) just to be in a rush to save a couple of bucks on ammo. I would rather have fun while loosing money to the casinos. But we will probably go Sat or Sunday just to walk around and see what it has to offer.

There's no point going just to save a couple $ on ammo. Besides, Miwall prices aren't anything to write home about right now. And there's really no point going just to go if you just want to check it out. Save that for November. It's less crowded (usually) and the paranoia hype will be even less by then. Do whatever your wife wants to do.

The Miwall table is only one table in the show, out of hundreds.

Miwall is the biggest and best organized. The other "true" ammo seller that was in the first ballroom were amateurs (and their attitudes) compared to Miwall. That's a mouthful. Yeah, they had a couple of pallets of .223, 7.62, etc, but, sheesh.

I wish there was a Calguns booth there, BTW. :43: (Hello? Wildhawker?)

the last show was right before/after the election so it was the beginning of the hysteria. Right now I've been reading prices on mags and stuff aren't too bad. If you want ammo get there Friday before it opens. That's all I can say about that. I'm tempted to drive up and see family but I wouldn't be able to get there Friday for some deals. If you got I'd be interested to know what the prices on LPK are.

I've been in the gun shops up there the week before....BARE!! They even told me not to buy from them at the shows because they jack the prices up. The plan on CA people coming in and trying to buy something FTF off the records since it's legal there. Some people won't check and others will. It's a common thing at the gun shows. I'd be going to buy magazine rebuild kits. I've read some places are selling them for $10 each.

Hey guys,

I know the "Big" Reno show is big and plan on going in August, but what about the one next weekend ? Is it worth going to ?

I'm definitely gonna go -- scored a sweet C&R S&W Pre-27 3.5" on my last trip in May...and the show is fun, even though you can't buy most of what's there (even with an 03 FFL). It's right near my birthday so "happy birthday to me" followed by a few reaaaaly quiet days in the Nevada backcountry.
