Not sure if this is the right forum for this question...I am going hog shooting on a ranch located within a lead free zone. It is a private ranch and the hogs are livestock, not wild so no hunting license is needed. Is this still considered "hunting" by DFG and does the lead ammo ban apply even if you are shooting livestock and not wild animals?

I am speculating, but assuming no. You are slaughtering the hogs with firearms.

Call the local DFG office and ask - that's what they're there for. Office locations and phone numbers are on their website: http://www.dfg.ca.gov

In this instance, the animals are not game. They are livestock. DFG doesn't have jurisdiction.

That's very possibly how they would look at it, but phone calls are cheap. Why speculate when you can know?

No speculation at all. If the facts are as they have been stated, then Skipper is correct.

You'd better call before Friday. DF&G might be on furlough just the DMV and other state agencies...

Thanks everybody for the replies, I kinda suspect this would be OK. But does DFG give straight answers when you talk to them or are they like DOJ w/Lockyear?

In my experience the wardens are straight shooters. I have never had a negative encounter, but I hear other guys gripe occassionaly. I suspect like other LEOs, the wardens are highly attuned to your manner of approaching them and respond accordingly.
