It's not sold as armor piercing (black tip) but as having a steel penetrator (core). Legal for sale under federal law, but is it legal or not in the PRK?

I'm pretty sure it's considered ball ammo but not sure enough to bet a jail term. I'm confused because most steel core is fine, but the word penetrator might freak out a DA.

perfectly legal in california.

It's not AP ammo. AP would have hardened steel or a tungsten carbide core. In fact, at under 300yds, M193 penetrates better than M855.

Please pay attention to EXACTLY what I am about to say.

AP RIFLE ammo is legal in California. AP handgun ammo is not.

Tracer ammo is generally illegal in Ca but, shotgun tracer ammo is specifically exempted from that.

Q: Is there constructive possession of "AP handgun ammo?"
For example, is possession of both "AP" rifle ammo and a pistol capable of shooting that caliber a no-no under CA law (i.e: ak pistol, ar pistol, or FAL pistol) sufficient to trigger this law or is it by caliber only?

Obviously, a handgun loaded with AP ammo would be an obvious no-no.

If the ammo is primarily designed for a rifle and used in such, it is legal. If you have an AK pistol and using AP rounds in it, then it is not legal since the firearm you are using is a pistol.

Ever seen an old box of Super X 357mag AP? That would be something that is illegal.

Ummm, what?

"If the ammo is primarily designed for a rifle..." pretty much covers it. It's rifle ammo and doesn't matter from what it is launched.

AP handgun ammo "desinged primarily for" handguns, is illegal regardless from what is it launched.

The law was written long before AR and AK pistols came onto the market. I loaded .30 AP bullets into .30-30 brass for my Contender with great success.
