It's cheap ammo; longer effective range; easier in fire control. It's everything better than the 7.62x39, except when I have to attack brick walls, then I'd choose the 7.62x39. ;)

i just bought an SGL20 that i'm picking up monday....the reason im over looking this 5.45 round is because i already have an AR-15 in 5.56....yeah its not cheap but hey.:cool2: maybe one day if i have extra cash laying around ill pick up a 5.45 SGL

hoozaru

5.45 is more accurate than 7.62x39 after maybe 200 yards.
that's all, it's not everything better than 7.62x39. 7.62x39 is still the best CQB cartridge in the world.

According to what I've heard (one such source from an ex-Russian soldier) the 5.45 round is more devastating to a person than the 7.62 round. But the 7.62 is more desired for its penetrating ability, especially in an urban environment. During his training he learned that the 5.45 doesn't do much to penetrate walls, but is more accurate in 'combat range.' He compared it to a .45 ACP round. Doesn't have the best range, but itís accurate and will mess someone up. They trained him to fire accurately on full auto, and he said the 5.45 is much much more controllable on full auto. He said that in an open war (non-urban) he wanted the 5.45 but during urban it's 7.62 all the way.

this is exactly why 5.45 was invented in the first place. To compromise with young Soviet sissy and nancy boys in the 70s and 80s who couldn't even handle any recoil. They were literally dragged out of disco clubs and pot house, then shipped to Afganistan in a box.

It's retailing for the same price as the SGL-20 series of AK's. This 5.45x39 version is badly missing from many AKholic's collections since the demise of Molot, the Russian company that imported the 5.45x39 Russian Vepr. The development of the ammunition follows the pattern set by the U.S. to find a smaller, more effective/as effective, less recoiling, and more accurate round. The surplus market for the round is still going strong, so prices are still very cheap. Unfortunately, the ammo is not "range safe" with it's bi-metal jacket.

Are these available to order now from KVar?? I suspect a middleman CA friendly FFL might have to come into play....

I found something on the website

"You agree that any firearm purchased from K-VAR.COM will not be re-sold, shipped, transported, or otherwise physically taken to the State of California or any other state, county, or territory where such firearms are prohibited."

well if you just want an AK to have an ak, this probably is not for most people. There is a huge AK fan base who will buy this for the meere fact thats its a russian receiver in 5.45 would make a great AK-74M clone.

Once they start filtering out to dealers, prices will come down. All the SGL-20 series rifles on Kvar go for $970+. I got mine for $905 shipped from a CA friendly Gunbroker dealer.

It's a beautiful rifle, and I've always been intrigued by that caliber (known for soft shooting + deadly wound profile), but ALL of the available 5.45 x 39 surplus ammo is corrosive, correct?

That's a deal-breaker for me, because I NEVER clean my guns immediately after a range trip. Too lazy is part of it, but also, I'd rather do it at a more convenient time (ahem, when the wife's not home, so I can do it inside while watching TV, and not be stuck out in the garage, :43:). It's always a week or two before I get around to it, so I'd toast the barrel on that thing pretty quick with my bad habits.

I'm told that the Wolf Military ammo is non-corrosive. I've shot it through my Romanian CURII and nothing bad has happened. Of course it's not as cheap as the surplus stuff which is corrosive, but at least it gives lazy guys like us an option.

Remember that the Arsenal rifles are completely chromed out inside, chambered and barrel so that gives you a little lee-way with cleaning. From my understanding the Russian surplus 5.45 isn't very corrorive, but still is. If you want an easy way to keep your rifle from feeling the effects of the corrosive ammo; piss down the barrel/chamber and gas system when you get home. The chemical and urine break down the acids and salts from the corrosive ammo.

Just a thought. :D

And yes, there is always Wolf. Not quite as cheap as surplus, but non-corrosive and works just fine in an AK.
