Why stop at 1/4"?

This design would lend itself well to a "thumb wrap" for stability. Something sticking out about 1/2" on the side to wrap the thumb around.

It feels fine at 1/4" but I do see your logic here. :)

Yep, it's for the A2. He can probably do custom for extra $$. You might have to send in your grip and measure your stock angle.

Just to throw it out there... there's really no reason to use a custom grip for this. The overmold is going to throw off whatever is underneath and the shape of the original is going to be gone.

Rick looks good and the shipping was fast. I mailed several out at the same time so hopefully more reviews come in. I like to be able to run both sides of the rifle strong and week side and even with the 1/4 offset was able to go back and forth. You never know what stage designers might have up their sleeves at a match. Off sets can be made more to the side if guys want them. Gio shoot me a pm and I can make one for the maid just let me know what inserts it has on it. Im trying to have several stock styles pre made to get them out faster. One offs take a little longer.

It's made by R&R Racing, they make them for different scopes. I got my Meopta model from Midway.

What ever grip is used underneath still keeps the basic shape after it is molded since that is what makes different grips optimal for different users. I like the saw grip for the ak since it bigger and just did one over a galil grip to run on an ak. I listed the basic models since most ars and aks have the a2 or akms pattern and buyers dont have to get a new grip. But the maid has a nice spare bolt carrier in the bottom which I run on a 7.62x39 ar so the maid grip is also going to get one. A guy asked for a hogue so im going to test that and see if the heat does not melt the rubber. I can over lay anything but if I dont have the grip just mail it in.

Think what you like. This is America.

Your feelings notwithstanding, it's NOT a pistol grip according to CA law.

45 acp if you go to the for sale section there has been plenty of discussion on these in my thread. Bwise has a pretty long post stating these are legal as the law is written. I wish the post was not merged because it had so much good information in it. Maybe we can have the mods sticky what is legal at the top so newbies can read about it.

Sand down the skateboard tape a bit. Otherwise, it'll tear up your hands.

Here's what my original "fin" looked like circa late 2007/early 2008. I cut it out from the lid of a Rubbermaid storage crate (clear box, white lid). Used skateboard tape. Had a piece of steel expoxied in centerline of grip that was sandwiched between the plastic (necessary as the plastic alone was too flexible. Looked at making them out of Kydex, but instead went the 12 gauge steel direction that I've most recently spammed the forum with). Whole shebang bolted together like the duraglock ones.

No, that thing is on there solid and doesn't even wiggle. I also used red locktite on the screws so if I need to unscrew it, I need to use a heat gun first to loosen up the locktite. You can also use epoxy if you want it on there permanently.

The ar47 is great. The ak74 magazines dont fit without mods but could be made to run in it. Also have the mgi 47 lower to use the same magazines for more than one rifle.
Gotshotgun the grips fit very tight and cant be pulled off under normal handling since most of the grips are smaller at the top than the bottom. Some guys are putting epoxy to sleep better at night but its not needed.

Interesting, Thanks. Makes me wonder if the Masada/ACR will ever happen. I think think the best thing going for the MGI lower is the GG mag well. I also like how it uses a standard ar button on all the mag wells to.

Mini-review and first impressions--

I just received one as well and so far, I really dig it. When compared to the MMG, the handling is quite different and IMO, much improved.

With the MMG, I had to support the weapon by cradling it in the palm of my hand. A carbine class instructor, who hadn't seen a MMG before, noted that you had to apply more pressure with my support hand since you couldn't do the same with your strong hand. With the Duraglock grip, the handling moves closer to the original intent of the A2 grip so you can apply more lateral pressure with your strong hand, directly into your shoulder pocket. It just feels more natural.

The Kydex fits very snugly around the A2 grip so don't worry, it's not coming off. The fit was actually so tight that the bottom flared a bit and I had some trouble getting the included nut and washer to fit. So, you'll see that the grip bottom is secured with a slightly longer screw and washer, courtesy of Home Depot. Additionally, I threw on some TruGrip Glock 17 grip tape as it helps to facilitate a firmer grip hold. You could probably handle it as-is but I do way too many manipulations with it to futz with a bare grip.

I'll start a thread with a review once I have mounted mine and shot it, but it looks like it is going to work out very well for me. Duraglock cut my grip to fit my Ace Skeleton stock. I will probably mount it tonight (we had company over last night, so did not have time to mount it before everyone arrived).

Shipping took 1 day, and the grip looks very professionally crafted. I'm debating doing my own stippling with an iron or going the other route and buying some glock grip tape for it to add extra grip (I plan on using this rifle for tac drills, so I need the extra grip to make sure my hand doesn't slip whilst shooting on the move, etc).

Could you make one for the MagPUl MOE grips? Or will this just be strictly for the stock AR grips? I can see how it'll be difficult, or maybe not cost effective, to make so many different grips that may not sell that well.

Calguns is the greatest. My knowledge base has expanded 10 fold in the year I have been a member. In the last 12 months, I have become extremely competitive in Chabot's shooting sports, Built 6 OLL guns, bought a Dillon XL650, and have seen a huge growth in people contributing to the group by offering new products and services.

Duraglock has been at the front of the group offering those new products. This grip is superior to any other choice for a featureless build. My first chance to compete with it was on Sunday and I have to say I was almost unaware that I could not wrap my thumb around the grip. Palm grip, trigger finger on mag release fence, and thumb on ambi-safety. This grip has a nearly natural feel unlike the other main grip out there. I competed with the other grip for most of the year and every time my wrist would hurt due to the cant from trying to twist and retain the gun.

If you are building a featureless gun solar tactical grip all the way. Stock is a factory non-collapsible type (Per Rick's BS request). I can read a flow chart, thank you very much. :38:

Yeah and if you want the MOE to make a couple molds on for a while I'll be glad to send it to you when I get this grip. I have the MOE on another rifle so it would be easy to make a couple of these and keep them around if you have room. I see a lot of people using these grips.

On another note, I noticed on the web site that the grip for the G-3 was made around a plastic trigger group. Does it also fit a regular metal trigger group? I have a G-3 with a standard metal trigger group. Sorry to derail the discussion. :)

Great thread. I was actually doing some research on the MMG and just by looking at it, thought to myself it would be major hand fatigue the way it was set up. At least with this setup, it wouldn't be a major difference from the way my shotty is currently set.

I think I'm gonna go this route on my 1st AR build. Great site. Great community. Looking forward to learning more!

Not familiar with the MIAD but if you can remove the backstrap without a tool, you might be walking a very thin line. Popo can easily slap it off.

Whats nice is this snaps over your grip and can be removed without changing your grip when out of state. No springs to loose , safety detent pins to fall out or grip screws to strip. Have had these all happen when changing grips on ar series rifles .

I got the Solar Tactical grip and swapped out the MMG on my AK.
Even though I like both, I feel the STG gives you a more natural hold.
More importantly, during mag change (especially on an AK), the STG allows for a more secure grip allowing you faster mag changes (important in competition), at least for me anyway.

Also got the AK rails from Solar Tactical too, which allows me to get all tacti-cool with the optics cluster.....:P

Overall very happy with it.

I just got my two grip holsters in the mail and they have replaced my MMGs. I haven't shot with them yet but I will say they feel better in the shop.

I thought they were supposed to have a bit of clearance on the right side. Mine have the fin straight up the back. It's not a big deal just being nitpicky.

On the nitpicky note, can you get the grip screws in stainless? The black paint chips easily upon installation. Stainless hardware would be awesome.

To those wondering about fit and lockup. These went on standard A2 pistol grips and they lock up VERY solid. No need for epoxy. The surface has a nice grippy texture without being abrasive.

I will be sending Duraglock a VZ-58 grip when I can procure one so I can go featureless when mine get back from Overland.

Dirtbike thanks for the feedback. Could go stainless but felt the black looked better. I put them on finger tight when they ship to avoid marks but I know if you use a thin blade it will mark them up. Use a black permanent marker to cover the spots. Send me the vz-58 grip and will hook you up.

My concern exactly. I was going to make a filler plate, but all I have is CF and FR4 sheet. Perhaps Tap Plastics would have some material similar to that used in the grip?

Fjold,

Like duraglock said - mine is offset for a lefty. I'm stoked about being able to use my Norgon ambi mag release. I've also picked up an ACLM Ambidextrous charging handle - just pull straight back - with either hand!

With the LH offset grip, Norgon mag release, and ACLM charging handle your AR will be easier to operate LH than RH 'cuz you can operate the bolt catch/release with your trigger finger. The righties still have to use the support hand for that.

Notice the tab at the top of the plate which slips into the buffer tube channel and prevents the plate from being pushed/bent to the side.

Ideally this would be a single piece of Kydex and the rear cut could follow the red line shown above. The nice thing about this design is it would allow someone with a collapsible stock to eliminate 2 evil features with one device - as the extended section also blocks the stock from collapsing. For added security you could install a piece of PVC behind the buffer tube (also blocking collapse of the stock) or simply pin it.

How about it duraglock - you can now offer an enhanced version for people with collapsible stocks.

Looks good but how does that keep the stock from extending out further (it does not appear to be fully extended) and thus still being classified as an adjustable stock?

Texas Boy
08-21-2009, 11:12 AM
The stock is indeed fully extended and the lock pin is in the first (last) hole. You can remove the stock completely, but you can not extend it further without it coming off the buffer tube.

Also note, the adjustment lever on the stock lifts the pin out of the hole on the buffer tube to allow adjustment. But to extend beyond the last hole the pin must be lifted much further - further than the lever mechanism will allow. Thus compressing the adjustment lever has no effect - the stock can not go forward due to the plate and it can not extend further since the pin is not lifted high enough. Lifting the pin higher requires grabbing the pin (I typically require a rag, but it can be done bare handed) and pulling down very hard while pulling the stock rearward. Once over this shelf there is maybe an inch of travel before the stock is off the tube. At no place during this inch of travel is it possible to lock the stock in position - that travel is simply part of installing the stock. Even your A2 stock "travels" over the buffer tube as you slide it on. No one can claim the A2 stock is adjustable because you slide it on the buffer tube to install, and I fail to see how this would be any different.

Test report:

Joe and I ran our Solar Tactical gripped AR's at the Tactical Intervention CQB carbine course in San Jose today. Joe seemed pleased with his at the class, but hopefully he will chime in with his impressions. Here is my take:

The grip presented no problems with weapon control or manipulation. Accuracy, shooting on the move, speed reloads, tactical reloads, and changing positions with the weapon (going prone, standing up, etc) were as good as a pistol grip. Much of the class was running registered AW's (the instructor brought a bunch of registered lowers), and I didn't feel like I was at any disadvantage. It was warm (mid to upper 80's), there was no shade, and I shot bare handed (no gloves). At no time did the grip become slippery or cause any weapon control issues.

Bottom line, this appears to be about as good as it gets for a California legal AR. If action/CQB type shooting is your objective, then this is the ticket. If your intended purpose is slow fire or precision type shooting where mag changes are not critical then a BB is probably fine - though this grip would not be a disadvantage.

duraglock
08-24-2009, 8:16 AM
Glad to hear it worked out for you at the course. I noticed the same thing as far as handling and function went compared to a regular grip. Not much is lost on an ar especially if you run the ambi safety and were it shines is using your hicaps which means less reloads and less time.

I'd like to add a fin to the front foregrip so it also would no longer be a pistol grip. I'm running a tango down grip on my bullet button rifle but with one of the larger foregrips there should be enough room to attach the kydex. Basically the same as you have except attached to a rail mounted foregrip.

duraglock

I think a front grip does not fall under the same definition as a pistol style grasp and even with a fin would be considered verticle grip. Maybe someone else can clarify.
