Quickie newbie Q: a length of 16" / 20" / 24" on an AR. This is measured from where on the upper, to where at the business end (specifically does it include (evil) flashhider)?

It is measured from the breech face to the end of the barrel. The flash hider counts ONLY IF it is permanently attached (pinned or welded). If it's only threaded on, it doesn't count and the barrel itself must be at least 16".

14.5" barrel with 1.5" permanent flash hider=OK.
16" barrel with OR without flash hider=OK.

A 16" barrel is measured from the bolt face to the crown of the barrel. The only time a FH/MB is added in is when it is permanently fixed, i.e. pinned and welded, to bring the barrel over the NFA 16" limit.
