The New York Times reporting this of course, what a surprise. The article outlines the NFL's policy concerning personal firearms among players, and they believe they shouldn't have any at all.

I don't know that I'd go so far as to say the NFL is anti-2A. At the end of the day, the NFL is a business, and their main concern is their multi-million dollar investment in the players. When they shoot themselves, or get shot, it brings unwanted attention to the NFL and player behaviors.

Also, saying they're anti-2A is the same as saying they're anti-motorcycle. Almost all professional sports contracts forbid players from riding motorcycles for fear of injury. Again, its not because they hate motorcycles or are anti-personal freedoms. They're just trying to protect an investment.

After reading that article I would say that they certainly are not anti 2nd or even anti gun. They simply have a set of rules that must be followed and like wilit says it is to protect the image of the NFL and the players.

How do you figure they are anti 2nd when they freely say this? Seems to me they are saying as long as you follow the laws like the rest of us are required it is no big deal. You also cannot have a firearm on any of the NFL or teams grounds.
In fact it appears as though they will even help you determine what is legal in your area.

They are anti motorcycle, scooter, anything that can take a multi-million dollar contract out for the season.

You'd be surprised at how many NFL members (not to name drop but a few guys from the Niners) I have met who came into the shop and bought guns for home protection. They even got their wives involved. They're concerned for their security just like we are with our own.

I think NFL players, as anybody else, should have the right to protect themselves (in home, or as CCW where legal), but I think the conventional wisdom in the NFL hierarchy is similar to what I heard a sportscaster say shortly after Plaxico Burris shot himself in the leg...

I agree with this statement, but I don't think it's racist... (as some callers into this sportscaster's radio show contended).

Basically he said this: Not all, but a lot of new NFL players are young men just out of college who have been blessed with a talent that has allowed them to become millionaires. Not all, but a lot of these young men come from poor neighborhoods and questionable upbringings. Not all, but a lot of these young men, when they cash their first check, can't wait to go back to the ghetto, rollin' in their $100K car with spinners and gold detailing, wearing diamond jewelry to "show off."

Technically, there is nothing wrong with this, but there is an element of whatever it may be - jealousy, envy, maybe just an old grudge, that makes some of the "old friends" not so friendly anymore. Said young NFL player arms himself to deal with any confrontations he might have.

The sportscaster who stated this seemed to think the behavior was pretty prevalent.

Great the link is gone now, but part of the NFL policy explicitly said, that if you own a firearm, that often you, or your family become the loser for just simply owning it. That policy contained nothing positive at all about legal gun ownership.
