Don't know if it's real, but I guess gas pistons aren't that much better after all:

Apparently the gas regulator, which that controls the amount of gas flowing into the gas piston system, often switches modes during firing.

Sounds like a problem with the HK416, not with gas piston systems.

I talked to one of the LAPD SWAT trainers and he said that they are cycling these through their test team and having all kinds of problems, mostly with different ammo types.

Are you shi*ting me?

This is all based on reports from a poster on the ar15.com forums.

Tanfo, a Norwegian soldier, reports at the ar15.com forum that they have been having problems with their new HK416 rifes.

The Firearm Blog is a reliable gun source, as much as the National Enquirer is a credible news source.

According to the Firearm Blog, Magpul Pmags are crap and GI mags are far superior. Nuff said.

I never thought there was a problem with direct impingement. The AR platform was designed for DI and it works best with DI. It's as simple as that. The 416's are pretty tacticool though.

even if this was true it wont bother 99.9 percent of us.. seeing how most of us are in CA :) and uhhh we are range shooters

I know my Gas Piston Uppers work in extreme Arctic cold weather of Alaska.:43:

My Gas Piston Uppers have been tested in Cold Weather conditions up in Alaska by the LE Dept. in Hooper Bay Alaska, that procured a couple of my GPU's.

They Cold Weather Tested one of my GPU's by leaving it out in Arctic Cold of 0 degree (-15 degree windchill) for 15 minutes, then bringing it back inside a heated office, where the upper quickly formed condensation.

They took it back outside and let it sit outside in the 0 degree temps for another 15 minutes.

They then test fired 100 rounds through my GPU without any issues.

I was told that their DI guns will seize up on them in same climate conditions/test conditions they tested my GPU in, and this is one of the reasons why they chose my GPU's for their Patrol Carbines.

Here are some pics:

I'll drop a big DITTO on that statement! A quality D.I. AR15, with a very reasonable amount of maintenance and lubrication, is a reliable weapon. Period.

It is mind-boggling that the design is still haunted by its very unfortunate Vietnam teething problems, which were in fact caused by bad ammo and, unbelievably, the initial failure to issue cleaning kits with the new rifles. This is akin to bad-mouthing 767's because the Wright Brothers' planes crashed a lot. In both cases, we've come a long way and the basic concept has been more than vindicated.

The gas-piston design is a very good one, and there are plenty of options out there (i.e., the majority of semi-automatic rifles on the market) if you prefer. Trying to shoehorn a gas piston into an AR makes about as much sense as converting an AK into a direct impingement gun.

To add the this story, the Norwegian Army specified this modification for use with suppressors to the 416. In the newly desiged chamber and gas setting knob is where the condensation accumilated and causes the lock up.

I am sure HK will fix this embarrasing problem.

Have friend in the Norwegian Army and no issues with the 416 in his training, nor the 417.

I'd like to see a link for that one. Love to hear the reasoning behind it.

I don't really believe that. I have a POF 415 and it has done great in Montana's cold (-30) at times. I would like to see some more resources on something like that.

Cold freezing weather happens way up there where the true norCalians live and draw the line of norCal authenticity. :)

Here's more ammo for the piston lovers.
