View Full Version : Question regarding transfer from out of state aunt

So I did a little poking around and still am not sure what to do.

Let's say Elderly Aunt moves to California from another state. When packing her house, she discovered an old handgun (Derringer) that was her deceased husband's. She doesn't have any registration papers. She wants to give Nephew the handgun, no charge.

I would assume that this needs to be registered because it is being brought in out of state. Does it needs a DROS? Is there anything else that needs to be done?

Thanks,

SEH

Assuming the nephew is in state, just do a DROS for it and all will be fine since the aunt is in state now. Nothing else would need to be done.

If she is moving to California then she needs to either register the handgun to herself (via the Personal Handgun Importer form) or transfer the handgun to somebody else (through an FFL) within 60 days of bringing the handgun in to California.

If she waits until she get a California Driver's License then you and she can do a PPT at a gunshop for only $35.

If the derringer was made before 1899 then she doesn't have to register it and she can just give it to you with no paperwork.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll wait until she has her driver's license before making the transfer. I just want to make it as easy as possible.

or if she doesn't drive she can get a California ID and that will suffice.
