It's not like they were issuing a lot of them anyway, but it will be curious to see how this unfolds.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department has stopped issuing concealed weapons permits for now.
Mike TeSelle/KCRA
A sign posted outside the department door in the 700 block of G street said no concealed weapons permits will be issued or renewed until further notice.
"No further CCW's will be issued or renewed until the sheriff's department organizational change is complete," the sign said.
Faced with the potential loss of more than 200 deputies due to budget cuts, Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinness said earlier this month that he may consider issuing more concealed weapons permits.
McGinness said at a public budget workshop in May that if the cuts happen, people would wait "long, long periods of time for the most basic public safety services, specifically uniformed officers in the field."
About 230 layoffs are expected in the entire department, according to Sgt. Tim Curran.

Yeah, first the F-head threatened to issue CCW's more frequently, then when SHTF, they just stop issuing them altogether. That guy is truly a S*#t-heel!!!
Unbelieveable how crassly political this SOB is.

You do realize, of course, he does this knowing he can't be ousted from office.

And that organizational change will be complete when hell freezes over!

Sheriff probably got hit with a waive of opposition and outrage. CCW permitting is not real popular in CA.

Notebook: Whoops, sheriff not stopping weapons' permits
Editor's note: This is another report in an occasional series on unusual events or people found by The Bee's police reporters and editors.
From Bill Lindelof:
Turns out it wasn't a sign of the times.
Despite a sign that appeared on a door for a short time at Sacramento County Sheriff's Department headquarters saying that concealed carry weapons permits would not be issued or renewed, that is not the case and permits would still be available for those who qualify.
A sign on the door at department headquarters read that "No further CCWs will be issued or renewed until the Sheriff's Department organizational change is complete."
Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran said that the decision on the sign was made at a lower level and should not have been done.
"There is absolutely no change as we speak today as far as the application and renewal procedures," said Curran.
Well, at least they are organized. :p

They're already being sued for issuance restrictions , and to go to nonissue in the face of Heller + Nordyke is just loony - sounds like a fast *****-slap by their legal team.

Seriously?
In my experience, most people in CA don't have a clue about CCW; it's not even on their radar.
I've had varied responses ranging from "You mean, a non-police officer can DO that? That's ridiculous!" to "You need a permit to carry a weapon to protect yourself from crime? That's ridiculous!"
Honestly, I think educating people about CCW is immense. Most people I've talked to about it actually come around to admitting that it is pretty reasonable, and that citizens should be allowed to do it, even if they personally wouldn't do it.

Just take a date stamped picture of that sign on the window and then print it out and carry that as your defacto CCW permit.
You could say: "Hey....I went to apply and they said they couldn't do it right now."

If it were legal, I would have thought it funnier if one of us put it up there. To parody the reality of CCW in Sac County, that until the "organizational change" (McGinness's federal imprisonment for corruption), forget getting a CCW.

There is no policy change. Meaning; There is still an overwhelming amount of corruption and political BS occurring. This man is not human.

You must not read the forums much if you believe that. More than likely it has to do a bit with a lawsuit that is in the process about coruption of the CCW process in that county.

I would hazard a guess that the people in charge of handling the process maybe are busy doing something else for a while so they just sort of suspended the process informally leading someone down the food chain who got tired of answering questions about it to post the sign.
Translation: "You're still boned.....but we're working on new perversions of law and justice"
fixed it...
