Does anyone make 12 gauge shotgun rounds that are meant to be signal flares? That would be so much cooler than the wimpy flare pistols.

Yes, Def-Tech made several type of Specialty 12 ga rounds. I am not sure who is making them out there now but they work very well. My favortie was a flash bang round that we played with in SWAT. It was oringinally designed to scare flocks of birds away but other teams discovered it work very well as a disstractionay device....... Some body will answer this post with the info of who is making these rounds as they are out there.

Cool stuff... but still I was thinking something that shoots a flare that drops to the earth as it burns... hmm maybe I will have to buy a break barrel and a loading press and make some myself

be careful, I've seen some very nice shotguns get a flare hung up in the choke and wound up with the barrel slagged.

Use in cylinder bore shotguns only... and only if you ABSOLUTLY have to

These will work, but only I would only se them in a non-choked 18" barrel:

Very good info the above guys gave you. The ones I was refering to by Def Tech were more like Large Tracers and burned out before landing if fired correctly. These things can be harmful to your weapon and they can start fires when they land, a marine invironment would be the best application if you carry a shotgun on your boat, but you are required to have a flare kit on boad anyway.

Aren't 12 gauge shotguns neat? They can shoot all that cool less-than-lethal stuff.

OWW!

Check Cheaperthandirt.com. They sell 5 rounds of the ALS "bore thunder" for $29.95. Still expensive but not as bad as $67.

I used to have a short plastic flare gun that shot a 12 gauge flare. Had it when I had a boat on Puget Sound. Did not shoot the flare very high but it was handy.
