are the laws / rules any different for non US citizens? I'm Canadian but moving to LA and wondering how I go about getting a firearm. Thanks.

You're not a citizen of the state, so good luck getting a firearm legally in California.

If you have a green card you won't have any problem provided you can satisfy residency requirements if you are shopping for a handgun (have a rental agreement or utility bills in your name). If you are on some sort of temporary visa you can't buy a firearm.

The only additional requirement that legal resident aliens have is to prove residency in the individual state for 90 days. This can be done with copies of utility bills.

If you have a hunting license as well, in theory at least.
