I'm in Orange County and I'm in the market for a long range rifle. So far the round of choice is the .338 Lapua. I can get a Sako for $4k, but I think perhaps starting with a Rem 700 would yield a more cost effective end product.

Thanks for the info, but I think I was just sold on the Savage 10FCP HS Precision. The price is right, has the features I'm looking for, and the .308 seems to be a more acceptable round, especially to learn to shoot on.

Check out the web site for
competition shooting stuff, Gary Elisio.... He is doing the latest in ultra high
accuracy tube rifles... A lot of Elite shooters utilize this type of setup.
He has a chassis that works with the Savage action.

^ It's for the new single shot target actions only.

Elisio also has magazine fed tube guns. You would still need a gunsmith to "accurize" the action, if so desired. Otherwise, just install it into the tube. Not sure whether or not the recoil lug needs to be ground round or replaced or removed. If not, it is a DIYS project.

Might try Gre-Tan Rifles or Warner Tool Company for custom work.

Eliseo's kit includes a recoil disk, which is just a big-***** washer that replaces the factory recoil lug. It's a nice feature since you don't need to use a jig to keep the factory style recoil lug centered up when installing a barrel.

Didn't he make the Palma team this year?

Unless you already have a savage action on hand, I would suggest buying the
Remington style action, a good trigger, the tube chassis, and some good sights, or optics. Check it out as the whole package will likely cost less than you might think, and will put you on the cutting edge of accuracy, with the added plus of looking totally awesome! .

I've been hearing good things about Savage and not so good about Remington lately. My first gun when I was 12 was a Remington, and it was a good rifle.

The Savage comes with the features I want out of the box, and they're known for .5 MOA without any tinkering. Another benefit is the Savage setup lets a home gunsmith do their own work, whereas the Remington would require a professional.

If you like savage go with that, I just want to apprise you of the options for a
high accuracy rifle. There are many rifles which will give you good accuracy out of the box, Savage, Remington, CZ, all very good.
I bought a little CZ 527 varmint with the 1-9 twist barrel here a while back from a guy on this board, and now that I have my loads worked
up for it, she is shooting teeny-tiny little groups at 100, 200, and 300 yards using Hornady 68 match bullets.I slapped on a Leupy mark 2
4-12 scope and carry her all over the fields. Now that is what I call fun.

I`m having ER Shaw redo a Siamese Mauser in 45-70. The cost for the barrel, modify the action, everything but the finish and stock is about $350, thats with a steel brl. in sporter config. Richards microfit has a walnut sporter stock, semi inletted for $125, so for a bit over $500 I can take down any large, North American or any other game, moose, deer or t-rex

Don't know if he made the team. We each received an e-mail individually, but nothing has been made public yet.

Go down to the precision rifle forum and ask the guys there. You will hear from guys that owned (that's the key word) savages and shoot Remington rifles.

With a 300 xtp muzzle= 2450/4300, 200 yds +000 1800/2700, anything more then 300 use like a mortar, lobe em in. Actually ballistic`s are like a 50 beowolf but better. The Siamese Mauser can be loaded hotter then even the Ruger #1, I have a #3 in 45-70 and it`s a bruiser. thnx

+1. I've had a AI rifle made by him with Rem action. Great guy.

All run out of his house with workshop and machines in back.
