View Full Version : Will a muzzle brake affect accuracy?
In an AR...
I think it will...
Now, if that's the case, is there a way to "fix" it.... like opening the front port a little more?

You might lose 1-200 fps due to pressure loss at the muzzle, however that
is not much too worry about.
Especially in an AR, they aren't known to be "tack drivers" per se.
Yes, it will always affect accuracy. It may shoot better, it may shoot worse or the change may be so small that you don't notice it.
It will not affect the velocity as you are not changing the barrel length. If you have a 16" barrel and screw a brake or a flash hider on it, you still have a 16" barrel.

I would be more concerned about proper shooting tecniques rather then a muzzle brake effecting accuracy. You have good equipment. The rest is up to you.
A muzzle brake will make it a heck of a lot louder especially on a larger caliber rifle.

As long as the muzzle crown is good it shouldn't affect it too much. Is that a Rock River brake? I read that they work too well. You can ream it open from .290 until your sights never leave the target

That's a good way to turn it into a flash suppressor.

Could happen.. if you had a 7" muzzla brake with no ports coming off a 16" barrel and the inside diameter of the muzzle brake was approximately the same size as the bore. It would have to be a true barrel extension :)

This does not fit that description:

Sound suppressors add a LITTLE velocity, but not nearly as much as barrel length does.

Muzzle Breaks do not affect accuracy, but good muzzle breaks will help from having muzzle rise therefor reducing recoil by distributing gasses out.

I grew out of that years ago.

ummm, no.......... not going to happen. I've personally chrono'd some handguns and rifles, with and without compensators/muzzle brakes - so I know.......
all the best,
Mike
