View Full Version : spring loosing tension

I carry my semi automatic pistol in a locked case.
The pistol is empty and the breech is open with a smaller lock keeping it safe.
My question is does this keeping the pistol open hurt the spring?
Will it loose tension over time?
Should I just close the action and let the spring relax?
Thanks for any help.

I always prefer to leave springs uncompressed when possible, but what really wears out a spring is repeated compressions and expansions (we're talking thousands of cycles here). It's the same thing with magazine springs.

Am I hearing you right that you have the pistol locked in a case and with a cable lock through the action?

Yes, probably overkill but I didn't want to get into trouble at the private range where I shoot.
The referee is self important and already gave me bad info on carrying my ammo in the same locked case as my weapon. He thinks it is a felony.
I do understand about the cycling of the spring.
Thanks for the info.

Even if you let it sit with the slide forward the spring will still be under compression.

Yea, but holding a spring at 30% compressed is better than holding it at 90%. I would always try to minimize relaxation whenever possible.
