And how is it holding out? I have 800 or so thus far and she is holding out well! Especially since last weekend I re hardened my ejector tip. Sighted it in at Angeles and could hit the 200 yard pig ~80% of the time. 300 yard pig ~50 percent of the time and I actually took it out to the 600 yard pig and hit it a couple times (about 20% hits). All open sites. All in all, Id have to say Im pretty impressed with the robustness of the design of the AK. Despite all of my mistakes, it still performs admirably. Your experiences?

I am also curious about this. I am currently building 2 Romy G Kits with AK builder flats, and must say those (or many others I am sure) are very soft. One mild hammer hit, and they bend.
As for the extractor, I heat treated mine quenching in oil, but it was soft when I was filing it down. Should I quench in water, or quench twice before tempering?

hotrails, what method did you use to re-heat treat your ak? Read the method i've been using and try it out, works very well.

At the build parties we've been heating with a mapp torch until glowing red hot then quenching in salt water. Clean off the carbon build up. Put 750 degree tempilaq(temperature indicator) on the spots then anneal the spots and allow to air cool.

Scott, JustinLB rhardened my rails in the manner described above. It is a lot harder than it was! The reciever is also a little curvy. I have been measuring it and it does not appear to be worsening as I shoot it more. I also noticed that many of the builders had the same curve in their reciever that I did, a slight bend to the left just before the front trunnion.

I'm gonna make this jig to hold the receiver so we can fully heat treat them. I'm going to talk to my welding teacher tomorrow so I'll pick up some more flat bar.

No one told me to clean off the carbon between the two steps. Oh well. Also, last night, I fixed lomalinda's ejector by building it up with my little MIG welder, should I have annealed it afterwards? I didn't think of doing that at the time.
