I want to upgrade my SA 1911 with a bigger thumb safety and commander style hammer. Is that difficult or do I need to bring it to a gunsmith ? if so, recommend anybody in West L.A. or Costa Mesa area ?

thanks

Hammers can be dropped in, but thumb safeties/grip safeties require some fitting.

The hammer to sear engagement should be carefully checked.

After seeing a gunsmith do it several times, I would have a professonal do it for me. I would reccomend Will's Gunsmithing in Corona (951) 371-4971.

You'd be surprised what you can purchase today; most custom hammers and sears are precision EDM machined and the critical surfaces are pre-prepped with the correct angle and surface allowing a pretty good drop-in setup of 4-5lbs (depending on your frame quality). There isn't much left to do except if you want a bit cleaner, you can have a smith stone the engagement surfaces a bit. A little bit of stone/polish work on the trigger bow, disconnector and sear spring and you will have a really nice trigger job. You can tune the weight of the pull further with the mainspring.
