You can probably give it to the cops to take care of. If not they could probably point you in the right direction.

Ok, back to the subject in question.
1) Call Police Dept or Sheriff Dept to see if they can accept live ammo. Don't walk in there with ammos in your hand without first calling them or making appointment.
2)I live in City of Long Beach and it is considered part of Los Angeles County. Both City and County will not take
ammunitions. So you might want to check the website of your City and County refuse collection department
or call them to verify.

Try your friendly neighborhood fire station.

If they're old enough, of some vintage, ammo collectors will buy the cartridges. You have to ship as ORM-D via UPS or somesuch but otherwise it should be ok. USPS is not ok.

You can find old ammo collectors on other forums or newsgroups. I would not recommend posting on eBay as they are anti-gun.

My County has a hazardous waste facility that will take it.

On 2 occassions, I have disposed of ammo by giving it to to San Francisco Police Dept. Just stopped by the station and stated I had some old ammo, that I did not want. They said bring it on in.

Either give to ur local shooting ranging to dispose of them, or else just dump it in the ocean.

Since no one else asked, how old is old? What are we talking about here?

I have components (powder, mainly) that, in spite of having the dreaded "smell", still makes functional rounds of ammo that go bang and put holes into stuff.

Shelf life for ammo is quite possibly indefinite if it's stored right.
Search the old Deja archives on rec.guns for: shelf life (http://groups-beta.google.com/group/rec.guns/search?hl=en&group=rec.guns&q=shelf+life&qt_g=1&searchnow=Search+this+group).
