I have moved to CA a year or 2 back and left all my guns back in NC. What would it take for me to bring this back here:(. I know I will have to convert or leave my real fun toys there. Just asking about my 1911's and shotguns, stuff like that.

I think they may have to stay there, because you didnt bring them back and register the handguns within 60 days.

I may very well be very wrong, so please wait until some of our legal nerds come correct me.

60-days applies from the day you brought the gun into the state.

you should be able to bring in your shotgun, provided that its not an AOW, or SBS... or a Assault weapon per PC 12276

your Pistols, i think you just have to register them within 60 days of importing them...

your Rilfes just cant be SBRs or an Assault weapon per pc 12276....

if you have semi autos that haven't been banned by name than you can convert them to be legal...

You CAN'T bring in any of your magazines that have a capacity of over 10 though. It sucks but it is the law.

Actually, if he legally owns an AOW in NC, he can legally bring it with him to CA.

Fed approved AOWs are CA legal.

NERD ALERT: He already owns them, he doesn't have to register them until 60 days after they are imported into the state.

PC 12071 (f) (2) (A) On or after January 1, 1998, within 60 days of bringing a
pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon
the person into this state, a personal handgun importer shall do one
of the following:
(i) Forward by prepaid mail or deliver in person to the Department
of Justice, a report prescribed by the department including
information concerning that individual and a description of the
firearm in question.
(ii) Sell or transfer the firearm in accordance with the
provisions of subdivision (d) or in accordance with the provisions of
an exemption from subdivision (d).
(iii) Sell or transfer the firearm to a dealer licensed pursuant
to Section 12071.
(iv) Sell or transfer the firearm to a sheriff or police
department.

Again, i know for a FACT that it is possible to file after 60 days of bringing a gun in from outta state (assuming you lived and owned them outta state) with no repercussions, and they'll issue you a "A OK" letter

you dont want to have a incident with one without doing the paper work, however, if all's good, there isnt even a place on the form to ask when you moved here, or a check against your D/L issue sate, as a dual resident who never gives up their CDL can still self import then weapons you buy in your other state of residence

I'm not saying the clerks at DOJ are the official word, but the word i got directly from whoever answered the phone (i called for a friend) specifically told me "the 60 days is more of a guild line/good to have" then a absolute

since there isnt a registration for hand guns, the state is just looking for cash

Bring them in, no magazines greater than 10 rounds, no listed AW's or 50 BMG's, no Off List Lower (OLL) receivers in AW configuration (install BB mag locks). For Handguns, file DOJ NEW RESIDENT HANDGUN OWNERSHIP REPORT, found here: http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/ab991frm.pdf along with $19 per handgun. They will send you a letter after they have processed it.
